There was a lot to like in Yigal Azrouël’s men’s Spring 2011 collection. Cuts were loose and comfortable, colors were muted and warm-save for two pairs of highlighter-bright shorts—and the vibe was very downtown cool. Long sleeveless overcoats were hip and disarming, and the sole blazer had a tough leather trim. That leather, black and shiny, showed up all over, in the requisite motorcycle jacket but also, more intriguingly, as both shorts and elbow patches on a chunky sweater. The boots and sandals were sleek yet rugged, often a patchwork of distressed leather and canvas, all with high tops that laced up at the back. The socks that peeked up over the tops—not a single pair of pants covered the ankles—offered bright dashes of pink and yellow, a shocking contrast to the gray and dusty green that otherwise dominated. Azrouël explained that the collection was an homage to juxtaposition, and the various opposites he sent down the runway, the bright and the dark, the hard and the soft, the rough and the smooth, demonstrated that he knows exactly how to use texture, color, material, and cut to express his ideas.
