Daria's Divine.

dariait.jpg
Daria/IMG. Ph. Steven Meisel Itlaian Vogue Oct 03
Only one girl swept every last power S/S 04 show in NY , logging both Marc's, Anna, Luella and Calvin, as well as, Donna, Micheal, Narcisco, Tommy and Ralph. The girl in question is Daria and as the key Milan shows kick off today, the current cover of Italian Vogue can only amplify her booking stock. Which is why we're so happy we sat down with Daria for an intimate little Q+A before all the bookings came flooding in. Stay tuned....And if it seems like hot girl Beyonce attended as many shows as Daria walked, lets just say Ms Knowles' fashion campaigning worked. With one major American bible already lensing Beyonce for its December cover, look for another blue chip US title to join the fray. Its her moment!

Micheal Gandolfi/Ford and Thomas Husa/NY Models Ph. by Inez van Lamwsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for V Man

Here are two esteemed men of letters from the much buzzed about alphabet story in the first issue of V Man. They are of course Ford's virile Micheal Gandolfi and NY Models elegant sportsman Thomas Husa, profiling beautifully for Inez van Lamwsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Now there's a font that should become universal!

Can't speak. Can't breathe. Cannot believe the rare correctness that is Supreme's excellent new find Richelle. The face is beauty with attitude, the body: sex with strength. In the looming war for the best new faces in Milan this girl should book quite an interesting season.

Top Five Make Or Break NY Shows !

hana21.jpg
Hana/DNA. One of Milan's Most Wanted S/S 04 bookings. PH.David Sims for Japanese Vogue.
Meanwhile in Milan, right this minute its murder and screaming as all the powerhouses are fighting tooth and nail to stock their lineups with the freshest of the fresh faces. Will Prada maintain its leverage as the house that breaks the newest girls or will Gucci prolong its formidable track record for finding tommorow's stars today. Is Jil Sander going to regain her crown as supreme tastemaster in what might be the most emotionally significant show of them all. And that said, don't discount Dolce and Versace as being key platforms for all the new beauties that came flooding out of NY. Having tipped in code the 5 Milan shows to watch, for the record here are the Top Five NY Fashion Shows MDC uses to track the hottest new emerging faces.

1. Marc Jacobs : Broke Rianne Ten Haken/Elite
2. Calvin Klein: Broke Iselin/Supreme, Polina/City(Paris), Bruna/Marilyn
3. Marc by Marc Jacobs:Broke Valentine/1 Mgmt, Christiane/Marilyn,Heather Marks/Supreme, Gerren/NY Models
4. Luella Bartley:Broke Maya Mazur/IMG, Ericka/IMG, Oskar/Elite.
5. Anna Sui:Broke Lily
see (more) for details
PS: Speaking of sneaking, which fashion bible pre-empted the competition by shooting a certain young designer's line for its December and January issues, a week before it even showed in NY. Lets just say a new Marc Jacobs is being made before our very eyes.

And the details thereof

1. Marc Jacobs
Breakout Star (in fact of the entire NY season is ): Rianne Ten Haken/Elite .
Because the Marc Jacobs is the one NY show so cool, its beyond cool. This designer's quality control and taste point has proven to be the definition of directional. Though the MJ fashion formula will always love the 60's -80's period, the casting is never entirely predictable. One season Jacobs may cancel all the supermodels in favor a new cabine full of "debutantes', the next it might be nothing but major, major supermodels. This is the one show Milan watches competitively for significant trend signals for the new season. Not to mention the fact that every major fashion player in NY feels the need to be front and center at this event, making it a vital early showcase for power editors looking to scoop up the best girls first.

2.Calvin Klein
Breakout Star: Iselin/Supreme, Polina/City(Paris), Bruna/Marilyn
Now had Calvin still been at Calvin, this is the show that would be every inch as coveted as the Marc. Since it was Francisco Costa's first bow as womenswear designer, the suspense was building as to how much of a hold he will have on the house's identity, with model selection being part of the puzzle. That said, this show boasted the most coveted opening slot of any NY show. (This season, the face of the house Natalia, did opening honors). Despite the rough reception accorded Costa's work (and the heavy fallout bound to follow), this is the only major design house in NY that flooded its catwalk with upwards of 7 completely new faces. That was fresh of casting directrix Maida!

3.Marc by Marc Jacobs
Breakout Stars:Valentine/1 Mgmt, Christiane/Marilyn,Heather Marks/Supreme,Gerren/NY Models
Its a big show (casting wise) with 56 models, at one look each, stalking the runway. Consequently, one of the first questions most models pose to their to bookers is "Did I confirm the Marc by Marc yet?" In many ways this show's cabine is like a seasonal "Black and White Ball" of fashion. If you were not invited it makes you wonder...

4.Luella Bartley
Breakout Stars:Maya Mazur/IMG, Ericka/IMG, Oskar/Elite,
The influence of power casting director Russell March and power stylist Katie Grand, both constituents of the House Of Prada, throws off early sparks as what to expect in Milan. For instance, the Luella was the first domino that triggered the explosive path of F/W 03's big star Daria/IMG . Did Sunday's show indeed preview the next Daria? In six weeks we'll know!

5.Anna Sui
Breakout Star: Lily
Its one of fashion's worst kept secrets that a certain power photographer is the prime mover behind the model selections of this show. For that reason, no one's going to say "not available" when it comes to this booking and thus Sui's cabine is always note perfect.

It's All About Ala

Alaface5.jpg
Ala/IMG. Ph David Sims for The Face Sept 03
IMG has a huge winner in the pocket in the form of Ala, a pristine new face that has some of fashion most powerful stylists, photographers and designers marking her off as their new must-have. Of couse her visa was not processed in time for the NY shows, but then that just makes her all the more coveted in Milan no?

Major Maya

Maya/IMG. Ph. Peter Merman
Among the brilliant new girls who broke out of the Luella Bartley show was Maya Mazur (she was look 2 right behind Daria). Even though she's a new girl her runway bearing was so note perfect, you know she's set to have a killer season....Speaking of killers, in said show IMG had another major score in the form of a 5' 10' Canadian named Erica K. The IMG New Faces board clearly has all cylinders roaring!

Cha Cha Cha

Naomi Campbell /Women. DV Spring 03 cover
NC Connect is clearly not a vanity production with Naomi Campbell using her star amperage to pull in a VIP list of models for the Rosa Cha including former MDC covergirls Louise Pederson and Julia Stegner. Even more interesting is the roster of editors and celebrities slated to show up including Bazaar's Glenda Bailey, Vogue's Andre Leon Talley, ID's Edward Enninful, and music stars Lenny Kravitz, Pharell, Jay Z and Beyonce. Looks like the girl's working hard for the money (we heard her in the background at the NC Connect offices hammering out a few negotiation points)...In other news...retoucher to fashion's superstars, Pascal Dangin is rumoured to be buying an entire building in the Meat Packing District to house his next venture ...and all model roads lead to Pop Burger tonight for that now scandalous Fashion Week bash. Expect detailed pictures next week!

A swimsuit show w. 80 looks on 36 models walking a mirrored runway with a giant crystal centerpiece straight out of Logan's Run. That's fun no? As a bonus to all the proud Brazilians out there, here is the rundown of the Rosa Cha cabine.

Exclusive: V Man To Hit Stands

Front Image: Actor Elias McConell Ph by Mario Testino for V Man
Let's face it, the US men's fashion market has not been the most scintillating place in recent years. While the more directional of men's fashion designers have been crafting gorgeous runway moments, the American editorial reflection for this world has been somewhat sedate. That's why when word surfaced that the resourceful minds behind Visionaire and V magazine were brewing a new men's publication, our anticipation level flew off the charts. It was clear a major publication opportunity was being seized by the parties best suited. MDC caught up with Stephen Gan, Founder and Editor of Visionaire, V magazine and V Man, and Creative Director of Harpers Bazaar in between his many duties for this exclusive preview of V Man. And that's not the end of it. Stay tuned to MDC for more exclusive sneak previews of what promises to be the most exciting men's magazine in years.

Models.com: We're hoping V Man is going to be oversized, bi-monthly and very very glossy.
Stephen Gan: Yes V-Man will be as glossy and well printed as V...everyone seems to want that...but it will only come out twice a year in the beginning. The premiere issue is Fall/Winter 03 and the next will be Spring/ Summer 04 until we choose to quicken the pace. V Man has to develop its own separate identity from V, which is why it has its own logo for branding an image, and also why it is the size of regular magazines. Yes it's smaller than V because we just had to imagine V Man being able to be rolled up, stuck in a briefcase, a backpack or gym bag. Guys need to be able to grab it and go.

MDC: What new elements do you see V Man bringing to the men's magazine market.
SG: We like to think we can offer "full on fashion" for the American male. Everyone keeps talking about a new breed of males, we'd like to think we address them...

MDC: Who is the V-Man. Is he young? Rich? Decadent?
SG: We think it's a matter of taste more than age, and there are guys out there who are interested in looking good, who have money, but are young and cool, and have a wide eyed openness to style, fashion, design...and who are interested in a new concept of "male chic!" Think Karl Lagerfeld meets David Beckham meets a skateboarder meets a young executive...we'd like to think all these aspects are covered...

Exclusive! V Man To Hit Stands Pt 2.

Back Image: Brad Kroenig/Ford Ph. by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for V Man

MDC: A high taste point for women's fashion is a proven idea. Do you fear that a high taste point for men's fashion in the US might be a tough sell?
SG: I like your question about "high taste point" because I think that's a subject we play with throughout the magazine. I think guys like extremes...Dior mixed with the Gap...so we look at everything sort of the same way. There's shopping pages on sneakers, CD's, as well as art, cars and jets...there's monogrammed luggage stories, a mens earring story called "haute studs" as well as stories on dream bachelor pads...You may live in tshirts and jeans like I do but we all dream about these things right?.So actually maybe it goes beyond taste, maybe it's just about being a guy!

MDC: So will there be an occasional sexy-babe-in-a-bikini cover a/l/a the "lad" magazines like Maxim and Stuff?
SG: Yes everyone wants to know if there are babes in bikinis.Actually there is one fully naked Carmen Kass...which is better than lots of babes in bikinis...and she's shot over 6 pages by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. And she's got nothing to hide.

MDC: Will you be more celebrity skewed or will you sell fashion via the male models?
SG: I think the mix of both is always good...however while working on the mens alphabet story with Inez and Vinoodh and Joe Mckenna who styled it, we were faced with whether to do celebrities or models, one for each letter of the alphabet. We ended up with 26 top male models...As in A is for Alexis, B is for Bruno.I'd like to think V Man will usher in the return of the male supermodel! We haven't seen that in a really long time and fashion needs it!

MDC: Some of your first issue advertisers and contributers include...?
SG: The contributors include: Hedi Slimane making his photographic debut, Mario Testino, Inez and Vinoodh, Karl Lagerfeld, Mikael Jansson, stylists Joe Mckenna and Karl Templer among many others.Key advertisers include Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, YSL, Hugo Boss, Versace, Valentino,Hermes, DKNY, Chanel, and Fendi, among many others....

MDC: Any last bit of info our readers should know Stephen?
SG: Remember, it hits newsstands the end of the month (Sept) and it's only $4.95
MDC: (lol) $4.95! We're sold!

Michelle Blooms

Michelle/Marilyn. Polaroids courtesy of Marilyn
It's clearly a boom season in NY for Marilyn which has been quietly grooming a suite of gorgeous girls for their inevitable close-up! Now that she's been in US Vogue, will Spring 04 be the season that sees Michelle blooming into full fashion stardom. This one is ringing all the right bells with the casting directors so lets say the probability of that breakthrough is seriously high!

Amina Rising

Amina/1 Ph. by Andreas Sjodin exclusively for 1 Mgmt
Ladies and gentlemen, it's unanimous. The prize for best designed Fashion Week show package goes to 1 Mgmt which had the smarts to shoot all their models in clean black and white with one photographer, Andreas Sjodin. The results give the girls a clarity and uniformity that just jumps from the wall. Popping nicely is former MOTW Amina who has lived up to the expectations, logging set time with Meisel for Valentino Red, Testino for British Vogue and Solve for Flair. Spring 04 is positioned to be her first major NY season, so this beauty is clearly one to watch!

Mor Power

Mor/1. Ph by Andreas Sjodin exclusively for 1 Mgmt
With 3 V's and the current L'Officel cover under her belt, you can bet that clients are clamouring to get a better look of 1 Mgmt's next great breakout face, Mor. She caught our eye (editorially) in an earlier OTM, but this season very much looks like her runway moment.

Our Favorite Valentine

Valentine/1 Mgmt . Ph by Andreas Sjodin exclusively for 1 Mgmt
French newcomer Valentine is also doing quite nicely with the early options for 1 as she clearly answers the call sounding around town for "beautiful beautiful" faces for Spring 04.

Vivacious Valery

Valery/T Polaroid courtesy of T Management
When T promised us a surprise package for show season, little did we guess that the surprises would be so particulary pleasant. With former OTM'er Lisa Cant knocking em dead on her castings and Mini looking more gorgeous than ever, its clear they'll clock a respectable body of bookings. You also know and love Valery Prince, one of the sweetest , most incandescent models on the market, but don't think you've seen the best that she has to offer. She is having one of her best NY seasons ever so keep your eyes peeled on the runways this week for the ever vivacious Valery.

Anna Impacts

Anna Cleveland/T. Polaroid courtesy of T Management
Just check out the personal style on this stunner. It's clear Anna Cleveland picked up quite a few style genes from her legendary model Mom, Pat Cleveland. Dig the sophisticated balance between the plunging V of the layered top and the two toned point of the shoes. There are mannequins who are mere decoration and then there are models who send design assistants running to the sketchpad. Anna's so that! MDC is tracking mother and daughter down for a major spotlight feature so stay tuned!

Astonishing Aiste

Aiste/T. Polaroid courtesy of T Management
She took your breath away in V magazine, so be sure to check out the achingly beautiful Aiste as she makes her way through NY this season. If the buzz is true that NY Spring 04 is about clean fresh faced beauty then it doesn't get fresher than Aiste!

Audacious Ana

Ana/Elite. Polaroid courtesy of Elite
Former Elite Look Of The Year winner Ana M is poised for her breakthrough NY season and her timing could not be better. Though confirmations are still days off, it's clear that Spring 2004 is all about a new cabine and a girl like Ana who is fresh to NY but has the benefit of experience via a tremendous Milan/Paris season is looking quite audacious right this minute. Isn't it interesting how "haute-editorial" the Elite girls are looking this season. That scouting network never fails!
Posted by wayne at 01:06 PM
Ingrid Impresses

Ingrid/Elite. Polaroids courtesy of Elite
The Bob will never die. It will always come back on a young girl, looking fresher than ever and maybe even inspiring designers and photographers to explore a new twist on a classic. And speaking of classics with twists, isn't Ingrid looking more than ready for her close-ups in these Polaroids. The good ones always jump off the film don't they!

Lucy's Cool!

Lucy/Elite. Polaroid courtesy of Elite
You always need a cool girl to make that cabine special and with a drop-dead, dead-pan beauty that would have sent Robert Bresson in a casting frenzy, Lucy's one of the must-sees of the season!

Breaking Brigitte

brigitte4.jpg
Brigitte/NY Models. Polaroid courtesy of NY Models
Truly stepping up to the plate is NY Models, which has been surging on the new faces front with the stunning breakthrough of Leticia. But the NY Models show package this season is looking especially deft with former MOTW Renee stacking up a nice pile of options. Especially exciting is the continued evoloution of Brigette who has all the ammunition she needs to make her mark. Will this be the season that sees her hitting those marks. It's only a matter of time no?

Alluring Aleksandra

Aleksandra. Polaroid courtesy of NY Models
As those confirmation choices start to narrow, consider the quiet beauty of newcomer Aleksandra. It's the kind of feeling that will work for those designers going for a softer silhoutte this Spring (in opposition to the armoured woman of Fall). Besides feline eyes and a bowed mouth never fail!

Magarita's Major !

There is buzz and then there is roar and that roar is definitely deafening when it comes to NY Models hot new import Margarita. SEARING SARAH

Sarah/Supreme. Polaroid courtesy of Supreme
The new season is off to a roaring start, especially for Supreme Management which seems to be bursting at the seams with some particularly tight new models. With YSL face (and MDC covergirl) Julia Stegner and Gucci girl (as well as impending MDC cover) Nadine Willis in town for their first NY season it's sure to be a booking bonanza. But keep an eye out for even newer commodity, like Chanel couture catwalker (and former MOTW) Heather Marks as well as supherb newcomers like Jaunel, Amanda, Heidi, Ludmila, Vala, Karen, Mariya, Marga and Nicole. Sarah especially grabbed our eyes at MDC because you must love a girl with the taste to dash around in fishnet stockings and a schoolgirl style plaid skirt. That's inspirational!

Don't think for a second that all the heat's at Supreme. This sizzling newcomer Doutzen has set off a buzz that might justify her instant graduation to the Women board. It's the Spring shows so a girl with that glowing skin and winning bod just might the winner in the show season sweepstakes.

Wow Factor

Liliane/Ford. Ph Dujan for Oct 03 W
As the NY castings for the Spring/Summer 04 shows go into overdrive, the October editorials will be key in clinching that crucial visibility in the eyes of the right casting directors. And showing amazing timing is the sensation called Liliane in this "Pretty Baby" story in October's W (yes featuring that sizzling J-Lo cover as scooped in the NY Post). Liliane's show options should be interesting no...Speaking of W..the big bash tonight is undoubtably W's dinner for Ms. Kate Moss at The Maritime Hotel but do make time for Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B launch for Le Sportsac.
