Kanye West was sitting front-row when Phillip Lim sent his men’s Spring 2011 collection down the runway Friday afternoon, looking on approvingly from behind his shades. Against a stark, imposing set of wood and stone just down the street from Penn Station, Lim’s ’70s-inspired looks demonstrated another step in the designer’s aesthetic evolution. Short belted jackets and long vests suggested new proportions, while sheer shirts and leather t-shirts demonstrated Lim’s talent with texture. Embroidered paisley made an appearance, and the extended belts and flowing scarves trailing from back pockets were emphatic stylistic grace notes. The clothes were clean and simple, with the unexpected colors and detailing that are Lim’s signatures. The show closed with a series of all-black looks that summed-up the whole collection perfectly: they were sharp, structured, and effortlessly cool.
