Joan Smalls backstage at Christopher Kane (London Fashion Week)
Photo by: Irene Scioti, courtesy of Cheryl Leung

This is not Joan Small’s very first Fashion Week but it is her premiere as a model worthy of all those buzzwords that we love at OTM. And indeed Ms Smalls is the very definition of coveted, blue chip and must-have right this minute. Coming off a sweeping FW10 NYC and London season, Joan has walked for Antonio Berardi, Christopher Kane, Aquascutum, Julian McDonald, Anna Sui, Michael Kors, Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Altuzarra and Alexander Wang. This is all after her surprise appearance at the Givenchy Spring 10 couture showing, proving again that Riccardo Tisci stands as a very prescient tastemaker when it comes to model choices. Milan stands as her next platform, with Paris bound to be an interesting venue for a young woman who has proven herself to be the very definition of grace and professionalism. And already in all that velocity are the sparks of very avid interest from some of fashion’s finest photographers. It couldn’t happen to a nicer girl.

  14. page says:

@andrea ross why must we label the models with ethnicity or race anytime one is featured that isn’t caucasian?
…joan, chanel, jourdan, sesilee, rose, arlenis, lyndsey, & re’l among others are beautiful women period… not just beautiful for black girls… and none of them should be ‘watching their backs’ because if casters and designers have an ounce of sensibility they’ll see that each of these girls are striking in their own way, & that there is enough space for all of them to be successful in the fashion industry…. how preposterous & ignorant would i sound if made the statement that ‘all the other white girls better watch backs, because of karlie kloss.’

  44. Sarah says:

Congratulation Joan. You deserved to be #1. I know that she will have a lot of editorials and campaigns. Go Joan.

  45. MACK says:

CANT MESS WITH THE PUERTO RICANS!!! I know its not about race here but the girl is Puerto Rican not black…just because she is dark skin doesnt mean she is what you see at first glance…Being Puerto Rican myself..i get very fustrasted when people think I’m something other than what I am…I know I shouldnt but what really angers me is when I say, “Oh, well I’m actually Puerto Rican!” and people say, “Isnt’t it the same” AHHH I want to scream..Its like saying a Japanese Person is Mexican…TOTALLY different people…way different culture, heritage, ancestors..etc..I’m sure Joan Smalls or rather Joan Rodriguez which is her real name would understand my rants..(Sorry but some people’s comments just hit a sore spot, I wish some people would travel the world and see different people)..Tan/Dark skin doesnt equate a certain ethnicity..but other than that…She is Phenominal..I hope for nothing but the Greatest for Joan!!! All in all beauty has no race or ethnicity!

  46. Sarah says:

By the way I checked Joan’s biography, her mother is Puertorrican and her father is black from US Virgin Islands. I believed that Joan see herself as puertorrican and black. It is not a question of race, though is the excellent job that Joan has been doing. Following Joan in the Fashion Spot and the FW 2010-11, we should feel so proud about her, she did a great job specially in Milan, doing Prada, Louis Vitton, Givenchy, Gucci, etc.

  47. Noela says:

I like her, she’s very pretty, very promising. I would like to see more of her.

  48. Jelani says:

@MACK Just because she is Puerto rican that doesn’t mean she isn’t black… she is a black Puerto Rican. Puerto Rican isn’t a race.

  49. Sarah says:

I’m so glad that Steven Migsel is working with Joan. I saw the Vogue Italy and Joan look so beautiful and w/ exquisite elegance in those photos. Go Joan you deserves it.

  50. Sarah says:

I saw her April on 2010 Lingerie Nordstrom Catalog, she is so beautiful, elegance and with Such a high fashion look. Her next step is Victoria Secret for sure. Go Joan.

  51. Davido says:

    She’s a beauty!!!
