Tim Coppens S/S 13

Well kids, it’s finally here. After months of waiting, New York Fashion Week officially kicked off Wednesday, with Belgian designer Tim Coppens‘ stellar Spring 2013 outing leading the way. Taking inspiration from fighter pilots, Coppens took his sleek sportswear to new heights with a collection of bright bomber jackets and slim trousers accessorized here and there with harnesses and covered all over with shining gold zippers. Coppens, who won the Ecco Domani award for best new menswear designer earlier this year, has always had an eye for athletics, no surprise for a man who spent years as the design director of Ralph Lauren’s high-tech, high-performance line RLX. Spring saw his usual talent for fit and pigment, with eye-catching color blocking on a number of the pieces and a slim cut that was, as music designer Sebastien Perrin put it before the show, “very European.” Titled “Gentlemen of the Sky”—and with Top Gun classic “Take My Breath Away” as a soundtrack—the collection featured a mid-century modernist palette, all dusty and rich, taking cues from Richard Diebenkorn’s sweeping planes of color. There was a strongly graphic bent to the pieces, with exposed pockets and zippered panels, an emphasis on shapes and lines in updated classics like Baptiste Radufe’s gorgeous baseball jacket. Add in the quilted, jewel-toned backpacks for a final effect, and you have a strong start to what promises to be a brilliant season.
