Theysken’s Theory Fall/Winter 2013
Theyken’s Theory Fall/Winter 2013
Olivier Theyskens has always been attuned to the future of fashion, but this season the designer peers into future literally, culling inspiration from space travel, science and the forward thinking innovators who impact our lives daily. Focusing on a realistic version of what women might wear decades from now, Theyskens revamped classic pieces like boxy blazers, ribbed knitwear and quilted tunics. On the runway the pieces merged together seamlessly creating a cohesive look that was understated, yet appropriately high tech. Standout elements like the metallic, cocoon-like finale dress could have easily sauntered off the set of 2001: A Space Oddessey.
Fans of Theyskens’ bombastic styles from the days of Nina Ricci and Rochas, may miss the fantastical element of his work, but there is something to be said for pragmatism. For the girl whose eyes are glued to her iPad, whose life exists outside the realm of cotillions and film premieres, these ensembles are certain to resonate. Perhaps that is the underlying message, Theyskens has been trying to get across lately – women can look phenomenal without being encased in yards of tulle, or teetering from backless platforms.
