Last season Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier infused new excitement into Marc by Marc Jacobs, taking the brand from appealing MJ offshoot, to a collection with its own distinct perspective and charms. Bartley and Hillier understand girl culture and all its intricacies and that gives them a leg up on the competition. For spring the duo eschewed the season’s hallmarks and went with a punky rave inspired look. Tackling the rave scene usually means bright colors with a trippy ecstasy enhanced sensibility, but Bartley & Hilier kept things grounded and gritty. Jet black and glossy textures were all over their runway – especially when it came to the memorable accessories which were molded in hard plastic and resembled futuristic pill-boxes.

The youthful cast made their way through the neon lights of Pier 94 dressed in graffiti polka-dot printed skirts and twisted bandeau tops. Fun was added via space-age materials and a few graphic cues that nodded to the 90s underground. Fergus Purcell added the graphic splash to the show’s many memorable t-shirts which boasted lines like “New World System” in oversized fonts. We’re sure to see those tees popping up on street style blogs any minute now, but many of the collection’s real gems were the pieces that would look more at home at Per Se than an EDM bash. The silken slip dress on Kasia Jujeczka and patchwork party number on Lera Tribel prove that while the MBMJ girl knows how to party she’s still got an elegant touch.
