Move over Heidi there’s a new supermodel on network TV! For 16 seasons it’s been all eyes on Emmy award-winning show Project Runway as the must-see competition series but Lifetime is about to introduce the billion dollar beauty industry into its covetable formula. Adriana Lima hosts American Beauty Star, the new show that brings 12 makeup artists and hair stylists together for head-to-head beauty battles focused on creating everything from fashion runway trends to glamorous looks for the red carpet. Paired with a teammate who is a master of the opposite craft, they will have to work together to avoid elimination and win an ultimate prize of $50,000 and coveted team spot on a Teen Vogue editorial spread.

When it comes to beauty the 20 year veteran and supermodel is no stranger to the ins and outs of the industry with long term contracts with mega-brands like Maybelline and Victoria’s Secret. With her expansive expertise and trusty legion of judges and mentors, we spoke with Lima about the breakout show, the power of transformative beauty, and her advice on what it takes to be the ultimate American Beauty Star.

Let’s talk about your foray into the beauty world – what made you want to find and nurture talent for American Beauty Star?
I’ve been working with Maybelline for almost 10 years and been in the fashion industry for over 20 years. With all of that under my belt, I’ve worked with some of the world’s best hair and makeup teams and believe that each of them worked very hard to be in the position that they’re in. I’ve always been a fan of how you can express yourself through beauty and its accessibility.

How was it working with Russell James, Sir John, and Sarah Brown on this series?
I love this team so much. We became a genuine family and I have so much respect for their talent and what they bring to the table. We had the best time and I couldn’t be more proud of this show and the work we have done together.

What do you personally do to make sure you’re flawless inside and out?
I believe that it all starts with happiness. You can apply tons of makeup and wear the best outfits, but if you’re not happy, it will always show through.

What do you think it takes to be the ultimate American Beauty Star?
I think it’s a combination of talent and personality. You’re literally all over your client/model so you need to not only be talented but also a great person to be around.

What’s your advice for upcoming beauty creatives in the business?
Try and be a rule breaker and trendsetter. Appreciate and understand the things you’re seeing out now, but find inspiration in various ways to make your own looks and set yourself apart.

Be sure to check out the season premiere of American Beauty Star tonight at 10:30 on Lifetime!
