For Fall 2012, Richard Chai brought his diffusion Love line together with his menswear with a number of design motifs that worked surprisingly well for both genders, notably opening with a series of pieces with bands in different shades of gray. The silhouette for both guys and girls was softer and looser, while the overall look was a bit more polished than usual for a designer who has always embodied downtown cool. Still, the prim floral print blouses and ladylike coats were balanced by boxy cuts and nonchalantly cropped and belted jackets for the boys. Chai demonstrated an eye for texture this season, mixing leather with knits and utilizing richly toned stripes in a number of the women’s pieces. The feel was pulled-together and refined, slightly more grown-up, but still undeniably hip.
