I had always imagined Joan’s voice to be sultry/posh for some reason, but it isn’t. More young sounding than I expected. That’s not the point, but Joan is so amazing! True beauty, humble, talented.

can i just say how great I find that you finally changed? however this is what i thought:
-i honestly could not have chosen between karlie and joan, i’m not the biggest fan of either but still objectively impossible to me. i’m hapy for joan
-some models on the top50 need to move up, kendra is booking a lot of stuff like armani code, toni has l’oreal and tons of campaigns, hanne gaby is back in with meisel, meghan is basically everywhere and in every w/interiew issue, karmen pedaru should move up with all these campaign repeatings, bette franke is getting great campaigns and has an impeccable runway review, caroline brasch nielsen should be higher too, freja could be out too, why are marie piovesan, xiao wen and sui he so high?
-love the idea of industry icons because thats what they are, they are no supermodels! however I’m missing shalom harlow there and cindy in the supermodels?
-i like how you have put the girls in alphabetical order where its not necessary to rank them against each other, thumbs up!
-icould do without the hot list, but I think it will be a great way to have them there before moving to the top 50 too fast.

I totally saw this coming…i just didnt now if it was going to be a tie between joan and karlie. joan does have estee lauder and more blue chip campagins in the last year – like givenchy, chanel, fendi, gucci, mercedes,stel;la mccartney, roberto cavali, calvin klein jeans, estee luader and more. Meanwhile karlie is doing american manhassett and juicy couture. Either way, they bost deserve everything!!

Words can’t express the joy in my heart with this news. I love it when someone works hard to achieve something and it finally happens for them. In a period where models are bland with zero personality, we get a beacon of light in the form of Joan Smalls. Such a bubbly personality, stunning beauty, and great work ethic.
I was divided between Karlie and Joan for the number one spot because I believe that the two of them are working on a level far beyond the other girls are right now. As we neared the end of August I thought Karlie would prevail given her September covers, however, I applaud MDC for acknowledging Joan’s struggles and the difficulty of being a model of color in an industry where beauty is mainly celebrated as being “white.”
Congratulations to Karlie and Joan but to Joan I say thank you for being a shining ray of hope to millions of young boys and girls around the world who are made to believe that being of color is a challenge. You’re constantly breaking down boundaries and making people aware that beauty is far beyond what they see represented in the magazines.
