For Stylist Stella Greenspan, It’s More Important to Play

Fashion director and stylist Stella Greenspan’s journey through the industry has been as fateful as it’s been fun. Born in New York City, she spent her childhood in Zurich and after attending art school she returned to NYC to pursue fashion, and was offered a job as a stylist’s assistant for Beat Bolliger. A subsequent five-year chapter at Vogue under the mentorship of Grace Coddington, was where Greenspan further developed her knack for marrying the eclectic with the elegant, and eventually evolved her own flair. Greenspan’s stylistic narratives are compellingly playful, captured through the lenses of photographers like Cass Bird, Juergen Teller, Petra Collins, and countless others. Whether she’s racking up indies or the established few, her styling voice rings clear in the pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Purple, and Vanity Fair, with each editorial a testament to her ability to infuse garments with cheeky fun and attitude.

As fashion director of HommeGirls, the magazine meets brand that’s all about menswear, her personal style of feminine mashed with sporty leaps out of her styling for cover stars like Taylor Russell, Kylie Jenner, or Tracee Ellis Ross. As she hops between New York and Paris, a diverse clientele ranging from streetwear titans like Nike and Adidas to fashion and beauty brands such as Dior, Byredo, and Chanel have sought her stylistic vision to infuse their campaigns with a narrative punch. Director Dani Aphrodite shot Greenspan for Models.com to speak on how important personal style is to her, the enjoyment of collaboration, and how she emerged as a stylistic maven in her own right.
