What goes best with black? More black. Alexander Wang devoted his entire show to the wardrobe staple and it made for an impressive collection. Crystal Castles frontwoman Alice Glass sat front row and Wang’s wares with their proto-grunge feel and edgy aesthetic seemed tailor made for her. Starting with a strong shouldered, metal embellished blazer on Astrid Holler and continuing with a series of punky mini-dresses detailed with silver beading and an array of textures, Wang built up a look that was part downtown goth, part urban sophisticate. Rockstars make up a good portion of Wang’s clientele (as evidenced by his celebrity filled front row) but so do stylish working women, most of whom are always in search of a good leather jacket, or attention-getting overcoat. There were options aplenty in both categories, but much of the fun was found in the accessories. The giant platform boots with their studs, buckles and grommets are sure to be seen stomping around NYC as soon as girls can get their hands on them. The boots were made even more appealing when contrasted with the almost dainty purses and miniature leather duffels.
Given the sheer amount of black presented on the runway, attention must be given to the looks that strayed from the formula. Silver detailing added visual interest to most of the pieces and Wang snuck in a set of appealing white beaded sweaters on Irina Liss and Phillipa Hemphrey. Showstoppers included the unexpectedly seductive silver mesh dresses on Sarah Brannon and Behati Prinsloo, who pulled off the slinky knee-grazing gowns with aplomb. Lexi Boling and Anna Ewers’ metallic finale coats made warm-weather dressing look decadently chic and grabbed everyone’s attention – even little North West stopped her sobbing to take a gander at all the glitter.
