Alexander Wang Fall/Winter 2013

Models.com takes you backstage at Alexander Wang Fall/Winter 2013 at the Cunard building in New York.

Alexander Wang is in for the fight of his life, but no need to worry – he’s more than ready. With ‘Eye of the Tiger’ blaring from the speakers at the posh Cunard Building, Wang unleashed one of his most confident and unexpected collections to date. Eschewing the streetwise vibe that is typically a familiar part of his runway, the designer instead focused on luxurious and very grown up looks filled with furry textures. Fabrics were at the forefront of Wang’s fall style, particularly natural fabrics that move away from the current craze for all things neoprene and nylon. Models strutted down the runway in smoky layers of black & grey rendered in mohair, alpaca covered in leather appliqués. Sporting beanie hats, cozy flannel covered heels and giant fur gloves (one of the season’s surprising motifs) the girls seemed like members of an especially chic battalion within the Wang army.

The more streamlined looks featured had some of Wang’s design hallmarks, but were reworked in a way that seemed to lean towards an older, more sophisticated audience – his trademark sweatshirts were covered in mohair this season and paired with figure hugging pencil skirts. On the runway there were several standouts: cashmere sweaters detailed graphic blocks that give off a metallic sheen, slate jackets with rounded shoulders, subtly sequined tops and a pair of finale furs that added a touch of elegance. The industry has been all atwitter since it was announced that Wang would be taking the reigns at Balenciaga and this collection served as a primer of sorts. Though we won’t be seeing Wang’s designs for the fabled Parisian house until PFW, this more than showcases his skill. More importantly though, it shows a young designer in his prime – one who seems poised to take things to the next level.
