Sportif V

V29_cover.jpg
Missy Elliot+Laila Ali. Ph David Sims for V 29 Summer 04
It's getting hot out there and just in time for summer the scorching new issue of V is docked and ready to go. Featuring alternate covers of Missy Elliot and Laila Ali, both decked in Adidas as shot by David Sims, the bumper issue also features a sizzling portfolio of Olympic athlethes shot by Jason Schmidt. There's also a beautiful tribute to Stephen Sprouse. But rest assured, you'll still get your full dose of model glamour as profiled by the inimitable Gisele working with Inez and Vinoodh as well as some nude snaps of quintessential Brazilian star, Fernanda Lima. Our favorite bit? The portfolio of male and female models as shot by Terry Tsiolis. It's going to make your bedroom walls, kids!

Lovely Liya

197.jpg
Liya/IMG. Numero May 04
Look who's radiating ultra-chic hauteur on the new Numero cover set to hit the NY stands next week. None other than MDC's beloved Liya. Decked out in the kind of post-60's Egyptian regalia that would have felled a lesser model, it's clear that the girl-next-door has become a woman and a very formidable one at that. Variation on a theme is the great ability of supermodels, no?

SVM Zooms

Steve9-(2).jpg
Steve/SVM. Ph Mario Testino for Burberry S/S04
One of our favorite agencies SVM (leading the pack as the agency signing the most MDC members) zooms into view with the signing of Burberry's current signature face, Steve Burns. After frolicking on set w. Kate Moss, our very industrious Steve next surfaces alongside Steven Seagal in a forthcoming action flick. Now that's diverse! ...Speaking of Kate, this leads us to Rimmel which leads us to a very interesting booking for the additional face that has been added to that make-up line's roster. Sources are whispering that former Gucci girl Nadine Willis/Supreme nabbed a second slot in the FW 04 campaign. Stay tuned next week for a rundown on Campaign Season FW04. Our favorite line up thus far has got to be the 10 girl Prada army with its assembly of Prada faces past and present. They've clearly been having fun.

Divine Euguenia

Euguenia's celestial beauty shimmers uncontested in the new print run for YSL cosmetics. This girl has certainly been giving it to the camera in her recent shoots. She's up there now.

Natasha Wow!

This just in! Women's major break out girl of the season, Natasha P. shows why she sits at No. 1 on MDC's Top 10 First Season Faces ranking with her new Paris Vogue cover. They certainly do things differently in France and we 're not complaining.

All hail to MDC member Cynthia who after being scouted on this very site has now signed with that ever cool LA boutique agency, Nous. While in the process of building up her book, our fair Cynthia has now being approached by a major Milan powerhouse. We're keeping a close eye on this one!

Marta's Marvelous

D-032.jpg
Marta/Vision. Pola courtesy of Vision
Vision's audacious Marta hit NY last week for a round of go-sees and the MDC were 100% won-over by this sleek newcomer. And looking at the FW 04 campaign castings, it looks like we were not the only ones loving Marta...There's still roughly 21 days to go before all these campaign shoots go to the art department for final approval so we have to flash it in code... look for that certain Eastern European babe to make a big campaign and editorial comeback in your Summer books...As for the 3 girl Dolce campaign...think 2 parts intellectual chic mixed with a little latter day glamour girl. Coolest casting thus far? Probably the Chloe with Inez and Vinoodh lensing two very golden girls. Enough said.

The Return Of The Marlboro Man

kwame.jpg
Kwame/Ford. Ph Mario Sorrenti for Arena Homme+ S/S04
Its another score for Ford's Men's board as they log a lush 18 page spread in the current AH+ for their Nigerian-born find, Kwame. A rising young boxer on the NY scene, Kwame has wandered down the catwalk for Sean John in NY and with this high visibility story in his book, expect the options to explode.

Louis Vuitton and The Starlets

pg1_large.jpg
Scarlett Johansson. Ph Corrine Day for Vogue UK. May 04
Enjoyed the supermodel boon of the last Louis Vuitton campaign? Well love it while you can because our spies report some very suspicious activity on the LV FW/O4 set. Seems like a bevy of Hollywood's young and lovely have been sighted swanning to and fro. The leading suspects?(as of the time of this post still unverified)...Vogue UK's current cover-girl Scarlett Johansson, the Queen of Cool, Chloe Sevigny, saucy Julia Stiles and even Mr Man Of The Moment...Colin Farrell. Maybe Colin was just along for "moral support". In any case God bless Gucci and YSL for sticking with the Only Girl ideal. We could tell you more but you probably have it sussed out from OTM's abundant web of clues and hints.

Raquel Z Zooming

raquel.jpg
Raquel Z/DNA Ph.Daniel Gabbay
See what the opening slot for a Prada show can do for a deserving girl. Though her beauty and elegance has always been uncontested, look for Brazilian belle Raquel Z to zoom back into VIP view come the FW 04 ad season. With all the major magazines clamouring for a booking and her charts firing with the choice campaign options, its clear a star is re-born. Couldn't happen to a nicer girl too!

Showstopper

040904.jpg
Naomi/1 Mgmt. Ph Steven Klein for W May 04
Maximum points to Julien d' Ys and Steven Klein for that 24 page extravaganza in the current W magazine, starring Naomi Campbell in classic form. If the blonde up-do strikes you as a bit Janice Combs, then turn to Pg 180 where Naomi shares a double page with...Janice Combs. What fun was had on that set. Speaking of Mr Klein, just in time for the FW 04 campaign shoots comes MDC exclusive Q+A with red-hot photographers' agency Management Artists. It's got a wealth of insights. Stay tuned!

Top 10 New Faces (1st Season)

001.jpg
Natasha Pola/Women. Ph. courtesy of Models 1(London)
Last week MDC gauged the Top 10 2nd season girls, this week we turn our attention to that pool of newcomers who logged the most runway impact in tandem with the best editorial options of the moment. Interestingly enough, there are certain designers who are casting for totally fresh new faces for their given campaigns. That means "never been seen on anyone's runways or covers or editorials". Looks like FW04's spots will be awash with the shock of the new.

Pure Crystal

crystal_italian_vogue_1.jpg
Crystal/Ford. Ph Steven Meisel for It Vogue March 04
Our love for Ford's 17 year old breakthrough star Crystal Renn knows no bounds. With back to back shoots for US Vogue and Italian Vogue with Meisel, this size 12 model (formerly a size 6) is proving that rules were made to be broken. How prophetic was Crystal when she mused in Teen Vogue (Feb 2004) "When I walk through Times Square and see all these billboards, I think 'Yes. I could be up there.' Hey, I changed. I have faith that other people in the fashion industry can change the way they think too".

Power Player

black.jpg
A new player dives into the increasingly competitive NY scene and it is planit m, headed by industry powerhouse Jan Planit, formerly of IMG and Next. With the company going into full scale operation this month, it will be interesting to see that board come the S/S 05 shows. What does the M stand for? Multi-Media of course, which is looking more and more like the wave of the future in the management business.

Radical Lydia

Lydia-Hearst.jpg
Lydia Hearst/Ford. Ph Steven Meisel /It Vogue April 04.
Catch the slight distortion of the lens shifting the head to neck ratio, the high eighties make-up and those vibrant eyes. Viramontes would have blushed. The new Italian Vogue is a keeper, as is the cover-girl, Ford's new force, Lydia Hearst. Though she's only been modeling for three months, Miss Hearst is already skyrocketing as one of the most coveted new faces around. And with Cameron, Dasha, Jenny Harper and Remy recharging the board, it looks like Ford is getting ready to retake the high editorial territory. Then there's new find Juliana, a half Japanese, half Brazilian newcomer so special MDC is clearing room just for her. Stay tuned.

Modeling's Most Wanted

gemmanew.jpg
Gemma/IMG. Ph. Meisel for It Vogue Suppl. March 04
12 for Versace+10 for Prada+6 for D+G = what? The trend of designers trying to pack as many retail "looks" on set for maximum bang on their dollar. It sure is a buyer's market for the FW 04 campaigns and whilst it's too soon to print the particulars of the bookings (or the scandalous fees), a new generation of stars is moving up market. When MDC was done counting the sheer quantity of key show and editorial bookings over the past two months, these were the second season girls most likely to succeed. Don't worry though, for the Darias and Julias and Eugenias of the world. The market moves so fast now, those girls are veritable veterans. Stay tuned next week for MDC Top Ten Newcomers.

IZA ON THE HORIZON

II4.jpg
Iza/Karin. Ph Lee Broomfield
Clients might want to catch Karin rising star Iza, while she's on the go-see circuit as this audacious newcomer came off the FW04 runway season with Paris appearances for Comme des Garçons, Helmut Lang, Chanel, Rick Owens, Louis Vuitton. Round that out with her upcoming editorials in Numero w. Solve Sunsbo and Vincent Peters, Brit Vogue w. Lee Broomfield and Paolo Roversi, Italian Vogue w.Corrine Day and V magazine w.Laurie Bartley and what you have is the kind of stealth fresh face that certain clients like to claim as their own.
