After showing in Paris last season, Yigal Azrouël returned to New York triumphantly with a Spring 2012 collection that was sharp and cool, strong and thought-through. There was an air of restraint to the looks, with clean, easy pieces that took classics and twisted them to make them fresh again. There were sleek notch-lapel blazers and tough avant-garde vests, sweatshorts and oversized parkas, and a denim jacket with leather sleeves that showed Azrouël had his finger on one of the big trends for next season. It was all moody and evocative, but with a tone of lightness that kept it from feeling too dark.
