Did that then lead to the electro-chic feeling of the line?

That came from two things ,one, looking at my computer screen. That screen saver can just be mesmerizing, and two, some of these digital sounds that I'm hearing have images...they project these images. I don't know how to describe it other than the fact that,  I see  that music.

I'm not ultra high tech but I  will  listen to new music and when I hear it, its just like reading a book.  You're listening and you're making the video in your head. The Guggenheim had this digital exhibit .They had this one piece that I thought was so  fascinating. They had a keyboard and as you touched the keyboard, to make a note,  a projector would run lights up this string.. It was amazing, absolutely amazing . I think music and images definitely tie together

Were you listening to specific bands or  mixed DJ tapes?

I tend to gravitate more towards bands like The Cult or ..Bikini Kill...bands which are offsprings of traditional rock n roll. Based off of that I listen to bands like Prodigy, or Underworld  but the ones who capture it the most were this band, called Atari Teenaged Riot. They're out of Germany. They're definitely digital hard-core.

Well that digital feeling is very powerful in this city right now. How would you say working in New York impacts on your aesthetic?

Dramatically! Now that I'm working on the Spring 98 collection, I'm definitely paying more and more attention to people on the streets. I mean the energy level here is immense ...you can't walk out onto the street without seeing someone interesting. But now I'm also starting to pay attention to the physical streets,  the physical things that I walk on, like the patterns on the street. Y'know, like oil and water after the rain...

Very urban textures

Fashion is totally a product of place. If I'm in London I need that certain aesthetic to remind me I'm in London...
