It has been a season of firsts for Polish designer Magda Butrym in New York. Following the opening of her new store in the city, she presented her first runway show for NYFW, bringing together the two places that have increasingly shaped her perspective, her Polish roots and her adopted New York home. The collection was also inspired by the work of multidisciplinary Polish artist Natalia LL, whose practice explored feminism, consumerism, and patriarchal structures. Cast by Julia Lange, Models.com Hot Lister Alaina Rae opened the show in a lightweight chocolate trench accented with pearls, paired with a matching cream bag and shoes, styled by Jacob K, Butrym’s longtime collaborator. Outerwear became a defining language throughout the collection, with monochromatic leather jackets, trenches, and draped bombers giving the looks a distinctly downtown New York ease. Butrym offset these more utilitarian silhouettes with lace and lingerie, from soft cream dresses to underwear pieces and tights finished with delicate lace trims. That tension between the functional and the intimate was perhaps most apparent in Butrym’s reworking of the apron, inspired by the romantic memory of her grandmother in the kitchen. Butrym offered a collection that expanded on her established aesthetic, with sensuality and moodiness coexisting comfortably.
