Robin Givhan Exits The Washington Post, Louis Vuitton’s First Cosmetics Collection, and more news you missed

Robin Givhan Exits The Washington Post
Senior critic-at-large Robin Givhan announced Sunday that she has accepted a buyout offer from The Washington Post. The Princeton University graduate has worked for the media company on two occasios during her highly-regarded career. Her most recent role started in June of 2014, when she joined The Washington Post as fashion critic and then took on her current role in September of 2020. Before that, Givhan had a two-year stint at Newsweek as special correspondent for style and culture. The journalist’s earlier run at The Washington Post started in 1995 and ran through 2009 as fashion editor. She is among the 30-plus staffers, who have accepted buyouts from the Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper and media company. Givhan said “I am a believer in the importance of institutions, of legacy media and mainstream media. There’s still a lot to be said and I’m just self-centered enough to believe I’m someone, who needs to be heard. So I’m not done. Democracy definitely dies in darkness. It is greatly wounded by silence.” Check out our latest interview with Robin Givhan where she spoke to Models.com Editorial Director, Irene Ojo-Felix about about the process of writing “MAKE IT OURS,” Virgil Abloh’s design philosophy, and how his visionary approach continues to disrupt fashion’s most entrenched systems. U.S. Sets New Trade Rates
As of August 1, 2025, the U.S. has finalized a baseline global tariff of 10 percent, ending months of speculation that rates might climb as high as 15 to 20 percent. Not all fashion hubs, however, were spared. Key production countries including China, Bangladesh, India, and Vietnam now face tariffs of 20 percent or more, putting additional strain on global supply chains. Some nations have been hit even harder: Switzerland at 39 percent, Laos and Myanmar at 40 percent, and Syria at 41 percent. Canada also saw its rate rise from 25 to 35 percent, in a move tied to ongoing political tensions. India, in particular, received a steep penalty. After an initial 25 percent tariff, the U.S. doubled the figure to 50 percent as a “secondary tariff,” triggered by the country’s continued energy purchases from Russia. Another major shift is the end of the de minimis loophole, which had previously allowed imports under $800 to bypass taxes. Now, all goods are taxed by country of origin, a change already reflected in the U.S. handbag market where prices have risen by as much as 12 percent. [Vogue Business]
