For Makeup Artist Marcelo Gutierrez, Beauty Defies Definition

Raised by two artists, it was only natural that Colombian makeup artist Marcelo Gutierrez was destined for a creative path. Growing up in Oakland, California, he began his journey in fine arts, studying painting, performance art, and filmmaking before venturing into the world of makeup artistry. His initial beauty inspiration traces back to his mother’s distinctive thick black eyeliner; he admired her ability to prioritize her love for makeup, even amid the challenges of a divorce, describing it as an act of ‘self-preservation.’ Early in his career, Gutierrez hustled on the bustling streets of New York, working as a stylist assistant as he sought to carve his path in the industry. Over time, he honed his makeup skills and shared his work on Instagram, ultimately catching the attention of legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath, marking the beginning of his career.

Known for his clean, glossy, and versatile aesthetic, his portfolio boasts a diverse clientele, including top models and actors like Paloma Elsesser, Lily-Rose Depp, and Joan Smalls. His work has graced the covers of magazines like American Vogue and Vogue Italia, featured in editorials in Elle US and British Vogue, and in campaigns for Dion Lee and Theory. As an immigrant and refugee, Gutierrez has become an advocate for increased diversity and representation in the fashion industry, especially for Latin Americans. He stands as a trailblazer in this regard, notably being the first Colombian cast as a lead makeup artist for a cover of American Vogue. Despite his success, Gutierrez remains fueled by a relentless pursuit of ‘what’s next,’ all while maintaining a deep appreciation for balance. Models.com spoke to Gutierrez about how beauty is undefinable, the power of organic collaborations, and the value of prioritizing quality work over quantity.
