It Happened in Havana
Considering Karl Lagerfeld chose Cuba’s Paseo del Prado to set Chanel’s Resort 2017 show, what better locale for the latest Models.com MDX editorial than fashion’s novel, new obsession. Hans Neumann’s latest finds model Ros Georgiou cast under Havana’s spell in this picturesque travelogue. The until recently forbidden island summons rum-soaked daydreams of colonial architecture, balmy nights in smokey cabarets and an exotic cocktail of 50s nostalgia and Hemingway style romance. The idea of Cuba as a sultry, untouched paradise has charmed designers before, but a 54 year old embargo kept it mostly that–fabulists’ renditions rewritten for faraway runways. The storied nation, off-limits to most, marinated in its own mystique, its political milieu to blame. Chanel’s arrival signaled a rekindling of industry interest and slackened restrictions. So as it is both topical and beautiful, Neumann and Ros, styled by Savannah White, offer a poeticized glimpse of Cuba and its everyday.

Ros Georgiou is my favorite model since her first photo, and one of the most interesting faces at this moment.

Hans Neumann is an outstanding photographer, but lets be honest here, the reason Cuba is ‘unspoiled’ is that its a repressive communist police state. It does rather limit my enjoyment of the otherwise excellent photography.
