Michael Bastian is often seen as one of the prime proponents of the prep revival—see his all-American classics for Gant—so to say that his goth-inflected Fall 2013 collection was a bit of a shock is almost an understatement. Black is a new look for Bastian, and he made his fresh direction clear right off the bat, with Romain Julien’s dark opening look of black on black on black, down to his fingerless gloves and heavy boots. The guys had their eyes rimmed in eyeliner, and sweaters were emblazoned with snarling wolves and ominous blackbirds. Hao Yunxiang looked menacing in his tough biker jacket, and there was a rough decadence to the fur tails that hung from several belt loops. Still, there were many reminders that this was still a Bastian collection, starting with Paolo Roldan’s cut-off shorts, a trademark of sorts for the designer. Many of the looks appeared ready for the ski lodge, like Ian Mellencamp’s bright orange jacket and cream diamond-knit sweater. There were plenty of Bastian’s playful touches as well, helping to lighten the mood. Hampus Lück’s knit balaclava had small ears poking out, while Jacob Coupe’s soft V-neck was finished off with a small red heart”. It was a refreshing change of pace for Bastian, and one that proved that he is more than just a one-trick pony.

The outfit looked like a mountaineer costume, I think I would of liked to see what was under his heavy jacket, the vest? I feel there were to many layers to enjoy the talent.
