Thakoon Fall/Winter 2013

A single crystal covered dragonfly emblazoned on a black dress was all that Thakoon carried over into fall from his whimsical flora- and fauna-themed spring collection. Though that show was a pure delight, no tears were shed over the absence of cute creatures from Panichgul’s fall offerings. There were far too many new treasures to take in: from the stylized hair and makeup, to the continuous stream of gorgeous dresses and ingenious footwear. Each element was in its own way wholly special and noteworthy, but to fans of Thakoon that should come as no surprise. In a crowded calendar filled with designers who all seem to operate on the same wavelength, Panichgul’s idiosyncratic collections stand out as moments of inviting originality.

Citing Ray Bradbury’s classic Dandelion Wine as an influence, Panichgul focused on capturing the joyful spirit of a summer day into a collection that could be worn well into winter. Impressive details were everywhere you looked: images of dandelions blowing in the wind were printed onto skirts, while matte sequins were placed on leather t-shirt dresses for added texture. Each model wore custom-designed earrings that curved around their earlobes like tiny, sparkling vines. Flat loafers and slip-ons in matte white, glossy patent black, and holographic metallic were every bit as attention-grabbing as the clothes. Outerwear played a more important role than ever, with a slew of fur accents adding interest as well as glamour. What could be more modern than a good ol’ fashioned mink stole, belted at the waist and worn over a shimmering 3/4-sleeve overcoat. The total look worked perfectly on the lithe cast of radiant beauties, each one enhanced by Thakoon’s creations. Given the uproarious applause during the finale, it is safe to say the audience approved as well.
