The sisters Mulleavy have left last season’s artist reproductions behind and headed into wearable territory for fall. Australia served as the starting point for the duo’s feminine designs, and while an Aussie-themed collection usually conjures images of beach babes, the Rodarte girls went in a different direction. Looking to the history — the duo name-checked everything from aboriginal art to the Outback during the Victorian era — and the rich natural beauty of Australia for inspiration, they created a romantic and refined look.
While idiosyncratic touches are still evident on the Rodarte runway (gilded stars in the model’s hair, for example), this may be the designers’ most commercially minded collection to date. The keyword for fall was “pretty”, and while that may seem tame compared to their earlier work, sometimes avoiding the edgy is the most unexpected thing a designer can do. There wasn’t a single piece shown that couldn’t translate easily into everyday life: even the shearling-adorned dresses seemed ready for life outside the editorial pages. At the end of the day, runway fantasies were meant to be worn by real women, and this season Kate and Laura grasp that fully. Standouts of the collection included a few gowns worthy of the upcoming Oscar festivities. We can already see a certain quirky starlet in the gauzy handprinted number that closed the show.
