New York- When we first got the fashion week calendar back in August, one name stuck towards the end had us scratching our heads: Perry Ellis by Duckie Brown. How, we wondered, would the same pair who brought us sheer zebra stripes and elaborately oversized trousers in seasons past tone it down for a company best-known for dressing Middle America’s dads? It turns out, rather brilliantly. Daniel Silver and Steven Cox brought their idiosyncratic way with cut and proportion to their d\u00e9but collaborative collection, reining in the mile-wide cuts and backless jackets they showed for their own show to produce pieces that were smart, desirable, and infinitely wearable. Using a pale, faded palette of gray, khaki, and tan with hints of gold, green, and pink, the duo added a quirky twist to the sharp suiting and outerwear. The designers’ personalities came through in the dropped crotches, in the scribbled stripe that ran across a short trench coat, in the bowler-slash-baseball caps each of the models wore. Kudos to the board at Perry Ellis for taking what must have seemed like a huge leap of faith, and kudos to Silver and Cox for coming through brilliantly. We imagine the looks will be worked over by corporate before they reach stores, but with a starting point as promising as this, the results are sure to be real winners.<\/p>\n
