Led by Prada, which reimagined the garment as a statement of freedom, designers explored the skirt’s versatility.

Louis Vuitton, Dior, Jil Sander, Calvin Klein, Burberry and many more offered their interpretations of the season’s defining piece.

Fashion’s history is intertwined with women’s liberation and the challenging of patriarchal dress codes. Traditionally, trousers have been viewed as a garment that redefines women’s dressing.

The resurgence of the skirt connects to that legacy, reflecting women’s ongoing desire for fashion that empowers them and allows for freedom of expression.

Inside the Fondazione Prada in Milan this fashion week, the first model walked out in a black bralette with a scarlet wrap skirt. Then a khaki skirt appeared, followed by an emerald one, and then a slate iteration. Sixty-three looks later, and not one dress or pair of trousers had passed by. Just an endless skirt-centric march, with muted pleats, flashy neon panels, shining crystals or dip-dyed prints reminiscent of Rothko paintings. Two of the models gripped fistfuls of pleats into makeshift rosettes at their waistlines, as if clutching an idea someone might try to talk them out of. A multi-generational front row—Naomi Watts, Hunter Schafer, Uma Thurman, and Maya Hawke—watched the procession file past.

It would be easy to chalk it up to a pretty, if not repetitive skirt parade. But considered in context, something interesting happened this fashion month. While there were little to no grandiose displays of newness as in decades past, there were subtle nods to the political challenges women are now facing, and the clothing on display seemed to offer a sartorial armor to brave the world. That has always been the goal of a good season: to meet the moment women find themselves in. And Prada‘s answer—a skirt, and only a skirt—appears to cut against the grain of a century-and-a-half of feminist history.

Chanel SS27 / Photo: Isidore Montag / Launchmetrics Spotlight

Try as some might, it is impossible to separate women’s clothing from the story of their liberation, which largely pivots around women freeing themselves from some variation of a skirt. Consider Amelia Bloomer’s Turkish trousers (1850s), Chanel‘s borrowed menswear (1910-20s) and Yves Saint Laurent‘s Le Smoking (1960s) as a few solid cases in point. That many offices in the US refused to let women wear pants until the 70s, and some courtrooms made them wait until the 90s, is bewildering, unless we call it out for what it is. And resisting patriarchal nonsense has been justification enough for women navigating corporate life to consciously or unconsciously slip into pants as a feminist uniform.

Prada’s skirts arrive on the runway as much of that progress is being undone. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, more than a dozen states have banned abortion. Federal rollbacks have weakened protections against workplace discrimination. And childcare cuts make career advancement even more challenging for many working women. Then there’s AI discrimination, which many believe blots out the resumes of women in midlife from the hiring process. And that’s just in the U.S. Elsewhere, the list goes on.

Against such a backdrop, one might assume that Prada would double down on pants. But the longtime skirt wearer did the opposite. And what Prada does, tends to set the tone for the wider fashion conversation, even if it takes a year or two to trickle down to the masses. Her skirt-centric display sashayed boldly toward the cameras as if to challenge the preconception that trousers alone are a portal to being taken seriously. Mrs. Prada took her bow in a pastel pink skirt with a scalloped hemline; her hands shoved deep in its pockets; living proof the right skirt can do the job. The show notes put it boldly: the skirt, it declared, was ‘engineered for freedom.’ A somewhat weighty statement of intent.

Mrs. Prada has always believed the skirt is the answer to almost any wardrobe dilemma. And Raf Simons, her co-designer, drew on her words from a 2006 Charlie Rose interview with Ingrid Sischy, recorded while Prada‘s travelling “Waist Down” skirt exhibition was in New York. “The skirt is like a T-shirt,” Mrs. Prada had said. “I’m much more interested in them than trousers… with a skirt you can do so much more, you can put so much more creativity.”

Jil Sander SS27 / Photo: LaunchMetrics Spotlight

Elsewhere, the skirt was having a moment too. Hot on Prada‘s heels, Jil Sander, Etro and Dior backed up Prada’s assertion that the skirt should take a leading role in a modern wardrobe (Calvin Klein had already made the case in New York). Each zoned in on the skirt’s newly crowned relevance in its own inimitable way, even if that meant departing from established house codes. Most poignantly, Jonathan Anderson took a major departure from Dior‘s archival whalebone corsets with floral chiffon skirts and whispery pleated maxis that skimmed the floor, as if wafting toward a White Lotus-style retreat. Freeing, indeed.

If Prada and Dior made the liberation argument, Jil Sander inched toward agreement in its own way. Simone Bellotti cut free from the minimalist house’s restraints with tactile hot-pink midi skirts and pre-crumpled pastel slip-skirts that projected a bedraggled end-of-day look; a departure from its usual pared-back perfectionism. Etro‘s “Halo” collection put bohemian skirts with sporty zip-up jackets. Even Calvin Klein‘s lean pencil skirts were sometimes transformed into airily translucent eveningwear, more reminiscent of a lingerie drawer than an office-mandated wardrobe.

Louis Vuitton SS27 / Photo: LaunchMetrics Spotlight

But skirts are not worn in isolation, and on their own they can’t make a political statement. Those in and around the industry tend to debate whether clothes are designed for the male or female gaze, and in 2026 those lines still appear to be blurred. Prada‘s skirts may be seen by some as freeing in and of themselves, but the bralettes they were often paired with ask rather more of the woman’s body underneath. Not every woman wants her midriff on show, but Prada and Simons anticipated that by offering skirts with sweaters and crisp shirt options, too. A choose-your-own-skirt adventure, if you will. Dior and Calvin Klein‘s subtler offerings may momentarily let a woman’s waistline be, and while a heel might seem the obvious finishing touch, there’s no reason a flat or a sneaker can’t continue traveling toward the same carefree spirit. Simons had said a skirt lends itself to all manner of occasions, “like when you want to be sexy, you want to be luxurious, you’re going to work, or you want to be at ease with your kids.” Some of those scenarios take more imagination than others—chasing a toddler in pleats is a skill in itself—but that’s what Simons was getting at: the skirt is there for whichever moment a woman chooses is right for her.

Indeed, look back at those skirts with the crystal decorations and it’s apparent Prada intends for the woman inside it to call the shots. Industrial-sized Velcro (which Prada described as one of “the most primitive, instrumental pieces of clothing in history for men and women”) doubled as a fastening and embellishment on several wrap skirts, putting the wearer in control of how much leg was out on show.

And what Prada does, tends to set the tone for the wider fashion conversation, even if it takes a year or two to trickle down to the masses. Her skirt-centric display sashayed boldly toward the cameras as if to challenge the preconception that trousers alone are a portal to being taken seriously.

Dior SS27 / Photo: LaunchMetrics Spotlight

Cumbersome crinoline hoops, once used to give the look of piles of petticoats, were now brought outside the garments as decorative shells that were more reminiscent of metaphorical armor than the near-literal cages of the mid-1800s. Mrs. Prada compared the shape of her multitude of A-line skirts to the frame around a painting: “So you are obliged to put ideas on the frame.” In the same way, her ideas put women front and center.
Dior reaches a similar place by a different route. Where Prada made the cage visible, Anderson did away with it entirely, crafting whisper-thin chiffon skirts that hold shape without squeezing the body. Crucially, his wasn’t a skirt-only show. Metallic snakeskin trousers and roomy double-breasted blazers shared the runway—a more realistic reflection of how a broad swathe of women dress, and one that doesn’t require the wearer to pick a side to be taken seriously (but perhaps Prada was delivering something for her loyal paying customers, not the general masses, this season).

Which brings me back to the flaw in the original argument. Women’s collective move away from skirts, at least in corporate settings, was never about silhouette or fabric preferences, but who is in control. Bloomer’s trousers offered freedom from the chronic health issues women experienced due to corsets; Le Smoking reframed authority and gender roles in power dressing; while the pantsuit in the boardroom signified, to a certain extent, equality. Each was a fight for freedom in a world built by men. Trousers became the uniform because they were the one item of clothing reserved exclusively for the other gender. Getting ahead meant leaning into masculinity: borrowing the suit, squaring the shoulders, hiding the body, fitting in. But slipping into trousers for the sole purpose of being taken seriously is no more liberating than wearing a skirt because it’s considered the right thing to do. As a whole, Spring 2027 feels like a timely attempt to reframe our wardrobes, by encouraging women to lean into rather than away from their femininity, as a quiet, personal act of resistance.

Women’s collective move away from skirts, at least in corporate settings, was never about silhouette or fabric preferences, but who is in control. Each was a fight for freedom in a world built by men.

Not that any of these concepts arrive tied in neat little bows. Mrs. Prada, who holds a doctorate in political science and was active in feminist politics in Milan in the 70s, explained her thinking backstage: “You need to camouflage the beauty so that you can live with people.” Whether that’s pragmatism, or a tacit admission that women still feel pressure to lessen themselves to be accepted, is open to interpretation. And coming from a woman rarely seen in anything but a skirt, it’s a contradiction worth pondering.

Burberry SS27 / Photo: LaunchMetrics Spotlight

The timing of these shows matters, too. A certain type of femininity has crept back into fashion over the past few years in ways that seem jarringly backward: coquettish bows, revived modesty, soft-focus tradwife domesticity. Prada‘s show even landed in the middle of an uproar in Italy, after Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani suggested that women who wear longer skirts are more faithful (he later apologized). Against that backdrop, a season that celebrates skirts could easily be read as conformity or shrinking back. But these collections ask us to drop the fatigued skirt-versus-trousers debate altogether, and with it, the idea that one equates to submission and the other to empowerment.

When asked about her intention, Mrs. Prada posed a question in return: “Everything is so complex and how can it be just one thing?” After all, the skirt started out as a genderless rectangle of cloth wrapped around the waist with no motive beyond covering the body. And while most of us have freely swapped between trousers and skirts for decades, for older generations at least, they’ve often kept an eye on what’s expected of them. Mrs. Prada sees that messiness as an exciting creative challenge: “Each skirt can also be entirely reinvented by every person who wears it, through its combinations and juxtapositions with other pieces. They can transform its meaning. The skirt is an object that is contemporary, because it is flexible, adaptable. It invites contradiction.”

So, what’s the overarching message of Spring 2027? On the surface, or for women sheltered from the wider political conversation, it’s simply: wear what you want, when you want, as you likely already have been. But for those who feel the weight of this moment, the message might run a little deeper. With dress codes largely behind us, Prada seems to argue that leaning into masculinity has only taken us so far. What if, ladies, this moment requires us to lean into our femininity and trust it’s the key to a new level of freedom that is equal, and yet different. No masking or dress codes required.

The clothing on display seemed to offer a sartorial armor to brave the world.
