For Spring 2014, the up-and-coming menswear designer Todd Snyder<\/a> took to the sea, specifically the Mediterranean, with a smooth, charming collection inspired by the stylish Alain Delon in Plein soleil, the original film adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley. This European flair brought a new kind of sophistication to Snyder’s pieces, which have always been elegant and sharp, but with a more American twist in the past\u2014appropriate for a designer who spent many years mining iconic prepwear at J.Crew. There was a relaxed throwback feel to many of the designs, like Alexander Beck’s supple leather varsity jacket in a rich burgundy, or Baptiste Radufe’s crisp white suit. The CFDA\/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist also worked with several winning patterns, like the warm blue-brown plaid on William Eustace’s shorts or the clean dark check on Jacob Coupe’s trousers. But it was Ben Allen who best captured Delon’s spirit, completely relaxed in a soft striped shirt tucked into a snappy pair of drawstring shorts, looking as if he had just stepped off a yacht in southern France.<\/p>\n
