Sotheby\u2019s called the sale \u201ca new benchmark for the most valuable fashion item sold at auction in Europe, and the most valuable luxury item ever sold at Sotheby\u2019s Paris.\u201d The all-black leather Birkin prototype, commissioned in 1984 and created specifically for Birkin after a chance meeting with Herm\u00e8s CEO Jean-Louis Dumas, went on to become one of the world\u2019s most recognizable and coveted handbag styles. The bag helped elevate Birkin, the British actress and singer, from a style icon to a global household name beyond fashion circles. Known for her bold silhouettes and playful tailoring, Rogge was a finalist in last year\u2019s competition and, in 2024, became the first woman named Designer of the Year at the Belgian Fashion Awards. She\u2019s also a 2025 Woolmark Prize finalist, and her designs have been worn by Dua Lipa, Chlo\u00eb Sevigny, and Rihanna. \u200b\u200bThe ANDAM Grand Prize includes a 300,000-euro grant and mentorship from Sidney Toledano, the longtime LVMH executive who also serves as president of the Institut Fran\u00e7ais de la Mode fashion school.
