With her eclectic take on fashion and distinctive look Janice Alida is a style star to watch on and off the runway. MDC caught up with the well dressed beauty to talk shopping, style evolutions and wardrobe essentials.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’m noticing that my personal style is constantly evolving, and not in slight ways, but pretty drastically, actually. I’m sure that happens to many people, but it’s pretty inconvenient! At the moment, I’m really into pieces that are more ornate and embellished than minimalist, like Balmain, Isabel Marant, and Roberto Cavalli. I really like a mix of ultra-feminine and tough; I am obsessed with lace and feminine colours like cream and pastels, but I am crazy about black, leather and distressed pieces. I also like to look more polished, and love doing this by incorporating menswear into my outfits (works great since my husband is a good sport about me wearing his clothes!).

When did you first get interested in fashion?

I have always been fairly interested in fashion, but it’s only in the last few years that it’s become one of my primary interests. Digging into this job has opened up an enormous dream world right in front of me. I remember having a hard time finding good-fitting skinny jeans in high school, so I would sew my flares into skinnies.

Has your job influenced your style in any way?

Definitely. As I get to work with and walk for different designers, I can’t help but be challenged to reinvent my clothes with the way I style them, and take more risks as I see designers explore different techniques and silhouettes.

What are some items you can’t live without?

A great pair of well-worn dark jeans (I love my Nudies that I got 4 years ago), my lambskin Margiela pants (I think the inseam must be around 45”), my camo Prospekt Supply pullover jacket, and some interesting flat shoes (heels aren’t a part of my day-to-day style); the ones I’ve been wearing this winter have a bit of a western edge to them and they’re from an Australian company which I found online.

Where do you like to shop / Which designers do you like wearing on your off time.

I haven’t seriously shopped for quite a while, but when I do, I like to go to a variety of places, from Bergdorf to Century 21 to vintage stores all over the city. I don’t have one dream designer to wear… I like a big mix of clothing and shoes.

Is there any piece or item you’re dying to get your hands on?

A Balmain dress!

Can you tell us about one of your favorite looks you’ve worn on the runway?

My favourite look ever was the Celine Spring 2011 blue, green, orange and white top and trousers.

What is your beauty routine like?

Pretty simple. I use the brand Cerave for my moisturizer (twice a day) and cleanser (every night before bed) since my friend and fellow model Emma Hansen recommended it to me not too long ago; it’s been noticeably effective at keeping my skin healthy. I’m obsessed with makeup, too, and so when I have the day off I enjoy playing around with it. I normally wear mascara, black eyeliner and blush for day-to-day.

The new hair looks amazing and you’ve had several really memorable hairstyles / cuts over the years – can you tell us what made you go for this style in particular.

Thank you! I’m really happy with where it’s at right now. I can finally tie it all up and only a few pieces will fall out. The style it’s at right now is actually just the way it’s managed to grow out naturally, aside from just one trim at the back right before Christmas.

I don’t know what I’ll do down the road. I like how it just evolves on its own lately.
