The Australian Five

Fashion might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Australia, but a recent event at the Crosby Street Hotel proved you might be missing out. The Woolmark Company and Australians in New York Fashion Foundation brought together a so-called Australian Five, a quintet of young designers working with the top-quality Merino wool that is one of the country’s best-known exports. Christopher Esber, Ellery, Fernando Frisoni, Magdalena Velevska, and Michael Lo Sordo each presented a selection of looks that demonstrated a sharp modernism and flair for color and print. While each designer showed a clearly unique sensibility, there was a common sense of futurism to the pieces, each aimed squarely forward making the case for some more attention for the distant continent.
