Helmut Lang Taps Peter Do, Diors Heads to Mexico City, and More News You Missed

Helmut Lang Taps Peter Do As Creative Director
Helmut Lang has tapped Peter Do as the creative director of the brand. Starting this Monday, May 15th, Do will oversee both the men’s and women’s collections and report directly to Helmut Lang’s CEO, Dinesh Tandon. Since 2020, the brand has been led by an in-house design team. Do and Lang share several similarities – Do, known for not showing his face in photos, reflects Lang’s departure from the runway spectacle of the ’90s and his shift towards intimate presentations before eventually retiring from the fashion industry completely in 2005. Speaking about his new appointment, Do stated, “No one embodied radical thinking more than Helmut Lang. It is a profound honor for me to be entrusted with ushering in the next chapter of his legacy.” The designer will debut his first collection for Helmut Lang in spring 2024 during New York Fashion Week in September. [Vogue]

Chiuri has already embraced Mexican culture, starting with her cruise 2019 collection held in the royal stables of the Domaine de Chantilly in France, which featured a team of Mexican women rodeo riders. Fendi Will Debut Men’s Collection at Pitti Uomo
Pitti Uomo’s 104th edition is underway with Italy’s trade agency, inviting nearly 350 buyers from around the world as part of its ongoing efforts to support Made in Italy. The show will feature 825 exhibitors, 41% of whom are from outside Italy, categorized into five sections: Fantastic Classic, Futuro Maschile, Dynamic Attitude, Superstyling, and I Go Out. These sections encompass traditional, casual, and cutting-edge menswear. Fendi will debut its Spring/Summer 2024 men’s collection near Florence, showcasing an intimate invitation-only runway show on June 15th at the recently opened Fendi Factory. This season, Pitti Uomo’s guest designer is Eli Russell Linnetz, who will present a late-night show at 10 p.m. following Fendi’s showcase. According to WWD, “he will contribute to the trade show’s setup by installing a replica of the Statue of Liberty, partially submerged in sand, in the central courtyard, drawing inspiration from the famous scene in Franklin J. Schaffner’s 1968 film ‘Planet of the Apes’.” Pitti Uomo will run from June 13th to 16th. [WWD]

Saint Laurent Productions Will Debut a Short Godard Film at Cannes
Cannes is set to be eventful as Saint Laurent Productions unveils a short film project at the 76th Cannes Festival in honor of the late Jean-Luc Godard, the founding father of the La Nouvelle Vague movement. Saint Laurent’s creative director, Anthony Vaccarello, described it as the “trailer of a movie that will never exist.” Additionally, the fashion house will release two other short films. One of them, titled “Strange Way of Life,” is directed by Pedro Almodóvar and presents a Western with a twist, focusing on male protagonists. The Godard short will delve into the creative process of the legendary French-Swiss filmmaker, known for directing films such as “Breathless,” “Band of Outsiders,” “Pierrot le Fou,” and “Alphaville.” Godard passed away last September at the age of 91. Vaccarello expressed his deep admiration for Jean-Luc Godard, saying, “he is one of cinema’s most influential masterminds.” [WWD]

British Vogue Releases Braille Editions for May Issue
British Vogue has made a groundbreaking move by releasing its inaugural Braille editions specifically designed for individuals who are blind or partially sighted. The May issue is now available in physical Braille format and accompanied by recorded audio descriptions. Showcasing a commitment to inclusivity, the May covers feature prominent figures such as Irish writer and disability activist Sinead Burke, who has achondroplasia, actress Selma Blair, and models Aaron Rose Philip and Ellie Goldstein, among others. Editor-in-chief Edward Enninful said, “the Vogue team and I are delighted by the response to the May issue, but what the process of making it taught us is that what’s most important are tangible and lasting changes. Vogue and the fashion and publishing industries have a great deal to do still, but it makes me very happy to see the arrival of these first Braille issues today.” To be sent the audio file and to print a Braille file of the issue at home for free or to register your interest in receiving a physical Braille copy, you can email [email protected]. Photographer Campbell Addy’s Solo Exhibition
London-based artist and photographer Campbell Addy will be debuting his first solo exhibition at 180 Studios this May. Titled “I ♥ Campbell,” the exhibit will be held at 180 the Strand from May 11th to June 4th. It will showcase 36 original pieces, including photography, paintings, and a new film shot in Ghana. Renowned set designer Ibby Njoya will curate the space. Described as an “exhibition of vulnerabilities” by 180 Studios, Addy expressed his sentiments, stating, “I feel like I lost the essence of who Campbell is over the last four years. I don’t think it was good or bad; I just think it happens to young artists who are plucked from obscurity and thrown into the deep end. I took some time away to grow so that I could come back and do it all over again—that’s how it feels.” [The Vinyl Factory]
