Coming off his last year’s win from the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and a new studio in Soho, Christopher John Rogers has injected new vitality into his already adventurous, playful aesthetic. For Fall/Winter 2020 presented inside the logistical labyrinth that was Spring Studios, Rogers flipped his $400,000 in winnings and mentorship into factory-made, iridescent custom fabrics in every shade of the rainbow and 650,000 Swarowski crystals bedecked throughout the collection, jewelry, and beauty look. A refined focus on drapery and exaggerated tailoring meant Rogers took Madame Grès references and manipulated taffeta, velvet, Italian crepe, and silk organza to frame models’ body in a way that showed he meant to make an impact through a sea of saturation. Case in point? After a few models walked there was a dramatic pause and then Niko Riam sauntered down the wide runway, wearing a stunningly described “Baja Blast” silk taffeta belle of the ball gown that made the audience audibly gasp. Casting director Ricky Michiels brought back faces like Aba Mfase-Ewur, Anzie Dasabe, Danielle Mareka and the exquisite Coco Mitchell back to showcase the creative collection and with a recent buy-in via Net-a-Porter, art meets commerce with Rogers quickly getting acclimated to the erudition of business.
