I love it because it tells a powerful Brazilian story rooted in culture, resistance, and identity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 An issue or cause you are passionate about:<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019m passionate about creating opportunities and visibility for people from underrepresented backgrounds, especially young people who have talent but lack access.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 If you were to choose a song that symbolizes this current phase of your life, what would it be and why?<\/strong><br \/>\nI would choose a song by Bezerra da Silva, because his music speaks honestly about reality, resilience, and surviving with dignity despite adversity. His lyrics reflect strength, awareness, and pride in one\u2019s roots. I would also choose \u201cCatatau\u201d by Jovelina P\u00e9rola Negra, as it represents confidence, authenticity, and a powerful presence. I used to drive an hour every two weeks to buy camel milk for my coffee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 What\u2019s a story your family\/friends like to tell about you?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe first show I ever put together for the first song I released under my name, so no one really knew what to expect. I wanted it to be very assertive, like \u2018this is what my vision of the music looks like.\u2019 On Broadway and Grand St. in Soho. My friend Meg and I started off by djing Yma Sumac and 50s Avant Garde electronic. Joe Liao tap danced. Legend Kembra Pfahler gave a reading about censorship and Lea Jaffe started playing the pedal steel guitar. Even the unplanned moments seemed to work in our favor. I sang one song and the bass rattled the ceilings of the 70s Soho warehouse we were in &#8211; decades of dust (maybe asbestos?) was snowing onto me. It\u2019s a moment I still get asked about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Share a bit about your background and upbringing.<\/strong><br \/>\nI grew up on a farm in North Dakota about 10 miles out of town. My parents are farmers. Every spring my sisters and I would go out in the fields to \u201cpick rocks\u201d before the year\u2019s planting would start. We went to the only school in the area and I graduated with 14 people in my class. I\u2019m pretty good at Guitar Hero. I go through phases where I play all the time and can play very well on expert and sometimes I don\u2019t play it for like a year. I had won the Krispy Kreme golden ticket and got free Krispy Kreme for a year. It was so random. The best parts of it include the energy, the diversity, the sunsets, and of course my favorite, the mountains! I absolutely love to hike and we have some really gorgeous ones. I think one of the worst parts is how hot it can get. I love the heat, but sometimes summer can be brutal. I also think it sometimes gets a bad rep, but there is so much to do and see outside of the strip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 What&#8217;s one non-physical thing you&#8217;d like to change about yourself?<\/strong><br \/>\nI&#8217;m a perfectionist and I have been my whole life. While there are many parts of this that have helped me excel in life, (work ethic, drive, attention to detail etc.), there are also ways it has held me back. I think if I could make myself less of a perfectionist I would. When I was younger, they would always come up with characters and a plot, and every night we would create a new chapter together as a bedtime story. Due to their professions, I&#8217;ve traveled the world and lived in Florence and Berlin. In Berlin, I was 4, and another kid started talking to me in German. I responded, &#8220;I don&#8217;t speak German yet, I just got here!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 One thing people may be surprised to find out about you:<\/strong><br \/>\nI&#8217;ve spent every one of my summers in Maine at Nichols Camp from the ages of 4-13 and I&#8217;ve been a camp counselor for the past three summers. This past summer, I was promoted to the director level and had to lead people older than me. I had to plan things every day and look over campers who were close in age to me. There are a lot of kids who are there on scholarships who deal with hardships and they look forward to it every summer. We spend a lot of time marking trails for charity, kayaking, and painting and it&#8217;s overall an experience I look forward to it every summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 What\u2019s the scariest thing you\u2019ve ever done?<\/strong><br \/>\nThere\u2019s a bridge in Maine where kids jump into a tide pool, but only at the right moment in the tidal cycle. It took a couple of summers for me to have the confidence to jump. Wanting to keep up with the older kids, I finally went in just as the tide began to surge. Suddenly, I felt it pulling me under.
