— Can you tell us about your happiest childhood memory?
A spontaneous midnight swim in the sea with my Dad and Brother when the beach was completely empty in the summer.

— How did you become a model?
I was scouted for the first time on the street in my home town by the agency I’m with and was then scouted another two times in the same week which was funny to me as I had never thought of becoming a model at the time!

— What’s a favorite book/movie/TV show, and why do you love it?
I love Outer Banks because it brings me back to the time I used to watch it every morning with my brother in lockdown. I sometimes go back to watch it for the nostalgia.

— How did you become a model?
I actually started modelling when I was a child. The first job I did was for the Gap Kids and Stella McCartney campaign. I had so much fun shooting them and think they are still my favourite jobs to this day. I stopped because of school until I was scouted at about 17 but with school and University I’ve only just started having the time to focus on it and I’m excited to see what comes of it.

— What are 3 interesting facts about you?
1. I accidentally met Nelson Mandela on holiday when I was young.
2. I’m a horse girl at heart.
3. I have a degree in Biology.

— One thing people may be surprised to find out about you:
Probably that my name was changed when I was about 6 months old. I was originally called Frankie (I think my Mum actually got the name from Frankie Ryder but decided to change it to Maya. When I was still figuring out my sexuality and would do anything ‘gay’ my friends would joke that Frankie was out because no girl named Frankie could be straight. I still have it as a middle name.

— What is your biggest irrational fear?
I’m scared of failing or of not being accepted by others.

— How did you become a model?
It was so unexpected — I was just walking through the mall when someone from a modeling agency approached me and invited me to join them. At that moment, I was actually just picking out a birthday gift for a friend.

— An issue or cause you are passionate about:
Racism, as it effects me and I definitely have to deal with it on occasions. In general I like to discuss philosophical questions with some friends… we go deep very fast.

1. I am the entertainer. In German we say ‘Mood Canon’. If anyone has an awkward family party coming up, let me know and I’ll get it going!
2. Staying with this vibe I love to be a host, I know how to put a table of fabulous snacks out!

— What’s a story your family/friends like to tell about you?
I once turned my bathroom into a disco for my friends… Disco balls, stereo system and of course snacks. My neighbours were certainly kept awake.

1. My father is from Sweden and my mother is adopted from Sri Lanka.

My family and I enjoy traveling, and we have a house in Spain near Alicante that we like to stay in during the summer. My dad is a franchisee and owns 11 McDonald’s restaurants in Sweden.

I’ve been competing in swimming since I was little and did my first competition when I was 4 years old.
