You’ve noticed him in the lookbook, the campaign, on the catwalks. A pale, lanky Latvian with a Wooderson-esque mustache. He is Matïss Rucko, an Amsterdam-based industrial music producer and composer who has become a go-to Gucci guy.

Who are you, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Matiss. I was born and raised in Latvia and this is my second year living in Amsterdam. My main calling is producing music and sound. Next to that I’m fond of drawing, styling, very interested in fashion, art, performance and expressing myself through those.

How did your career get started?
My first experience with modeling was back in my teen years when I was invited to model for Latvian Art Academy students’ graduation work, but then last summer I was scouted by my agency SAGE Management through my friend’s Facebook. After a short while, I was confirmed to walk exclusively for Gucci’s SS18 show in Milan. And that’s how it all took off.

What unique quality do you think you bring to the table?
Qualities that I’m bringing are my calm energy, diverse sense of style and raw point of view. In addition to that, I have great taste and a good eye for all details. Due to my slight perfectionist self, I always bring attention to unpolished edges and I like doing things in a slick and sharp manner.

Who was the first artist [in fashion/art/film/music] to make a big impression on you?
I think one of the first movies that really impressed me was Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo by Kai Hermann. It was dark and at the time hard to watch, but I couldn’t take my eyes off. Perhaps it was one of the reasons why I started to like Marilyn Manson. Aesthetics of dark, grotesque but beautiful at the same time.

Who was the last artist to make a big impression on you?
I think John Galliano has been one of the first and last artists that have made a big impression on me. I find his work really ethereal and something that strongly speaks to me. I enjoy the boldness and creativity of his garments.

What has been the biggest surprise or learning curve in the industry so far?
For me it was learning to be more patient, not taking things personally as usual and appreciating my own self more, both outside and within. Also grasping how huge and powerful this industry actually is and how many people are involved.

What motivates you?
The thought that there is someone special in my life who counts and depends on me, that I can always do and be better than I am currently. My family and the joy of being able to help them in any way. Being in nature, surrounded by all the beautiful creations of this world.

What distracts you?
Self-doubt and being too critical of myself, sometimes overthinking situations overly are the biggest distractions. And the little daily moments when I’m walking around the city and randomly noticing something beautiful to my eye. In those moments when it catches my attention, I just need to give a little moment of appreciation.

What/who is under-appreciated?
I think that the youth are underappreciated, there are so many young and talented people out there, with so many fresh and forward-thinking ideas, but with very little visibility and recognition.

What’s the best experience you’ve had in fashion?
To have a chance walk exclusively for Gucci show as my debut on the runway. Being able to meet so, so many great people and travel the world. All the new experiences that modeling takes me to.

What project are you working on now/next?
I recently finished working on music for my girlfriend’s performance piece. In the near future, I’m looking forward to new collaborations and releasing my own music.
