From Mogadishu, Somalia, daughter of a diplomat, one of five children, Iman and her family fled the war in her home country and lived in Egypt and Kenya, where she was scouted in the mid 70's by photographer Peter Beard and moved to the US to start her legendary modeling career. She became the muse of Saint Laurent, worked with Versace, Mugler, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, and worked with every major photographer of her time. She launched a makeup brand, Iman Cosmetics, and landed acting roles in TV and film, including a small role in the Oscar-winning movie Out of Africa. A political science student, she is known for her extensive philanthropic work with charities such as CARE and Keep a Child Alive. Widow of David Bowie, she has two children, Zulekha (from her marriage to Spencer Heywood) and Alexandria, and is a grandmother of three.
