Sophie Theallet Fall/Winter 2013

Sophie Theallet’s fall collection may have found its inspiration in a vintage black and white portrait of the designer’s mother, but make no mistake Theallet’s look for fall is rooted in the now. As one of the modern masters of tailoring she offered up a sophisticated wardrobe for women with lives on the go. Theallet’s graceful separates and dresses ran the gamut from blouses and skirts fit for the office to flowing gowns ready for the red carpet, but each piece was immaculately crafted and understated. There is always just enough fashion fantasy on Theallet’s runway to keep editors happy, but part of her allure lies in creating garments that resonate with consumers.

Working with an autumnal palette of aubergine, rust and emerald, punctuated by hints of slate and wintry white, Theallet showcased a flirty above the knee silhouette that carried into skirts, dresses and beautifully detailed coats. Floral prints and colorblocked flats added interest while sweaters that showcased Theallet’s knitwear skills, looked preppy without seeming conventional. All in all this was a strong offering from a designer at the top of her game. Though the winner of the Woolmark prize for which she is nominated has yet to be announced, we’re going to go out on a limb and say Theallet better make room on her awards shelf.
