Robert Gellar Fall/Winter 2013

The German-born designer Robert Geller has always showed an affinity for his homeland’s rich history of culture, from the strict graphic forms of the Bauhaus to the edgy aggression of Berlin’s New Wave scene. His Fall 2013 collection reached back further, to the high cinematic standard set by the German Expressionist movement in iconic films like Metropolis and Nosferatu. The set was all graphic black-and-white, but the clothes had a soft richness to them, especially in the characteristically vibrant palette. Geller also demonstrated his affinity for layering, as in Alexander Beck’s puffer vest over his double-breasted blazer with a mesh shirt peeking out underneath. The result was an abundance of clothes, but the looks came off as coherent and precise rather than overly busy. The individual pieces more than held their own as well, like Aiden Andrews’ color-blocked trench coat or Aaron Chisum’s red sweater slashed through with a thick black stripe. Stripes formed a motif of sorts, running through Lowell Tautchin’s cardigan, Marcel Castenmiller’s button-up, and even Robert Laby’s gloves. There was a cooly decadent feel to the collection—all clean lines and smooth cuts in a variety of rich materials and textures—with exactly the historical and artistic bent Geller can be counted on to provide.
