Helmut Lang S/S 13

The name Helmut Lang is often associated with the kind of restrained minimalism that thrives on all black outfits and hard shapes. Since the brand’s reinvention back in 2007, Nicole and Michael Colovos have primarily operated within those restrictions, but spring finds the designers in a very different mood. Color, pattern and dare we say it, softness – dominate the design team’s collection. Granted, this isn’t frou frou, or wildly out of character but it marks a big departure.

That said the changes are sure to be well received; old pops of orange and cerulean felt fresh and the floral tattoo prints (created in collaboration with tattoo artist Thomas Hooper) were an appealing touch. The mix of textures – ranging from matte jersey, to metallics, to glossy PVC on skirts, was especially notable, not to mention beautiful. All this finery was complimented by a simply stunning cast, each girl pitch perfect and imbued with Lang-worthy cool.

This is a beautiful collection. I want all the shoes.

I’m seeing a lot of Proenza Schouler, and even their last collection was a little derivative.

  3. Great show, with a lot of models (Monica, Ella, Ginta, Andie and Julia among others) looking simply great.
