Derek Lam Fall/Winter 2012

Derek Lam looked to the library for inspiration for fall. The bookmarks lining the benches at St. John’s Center were a thoughtful nod to the unassuming, quiet heroine of the show. Pencil skirts and delicate florals were a recurring theme, as were geek girl accessories like luxurious camera bags. The Lam muse may have been more reserved than usual, but she wasn’t a complete wallflower. Leather and sequins added a punch of extreme elegance, especially when paired together; the jet black texture focused number on Liu Wen was irresistible. Lam’s strengths as a designer showed were especially evident in the final looks with their casual but cultured mix of hand knit tulle and silk georgette. Sophistication echoed in the sleek hair and makeup, Tom Pecheux’s refined smoky brown eye and Orlando Pita’s undone up-do added the final bit of polish to an already stellar collection.
