The Art of Collaboration: Mathias Augustyniak & Michaël Amzalag

For this edition of The Art of Collaboration, Models.com Editor-in-Chief Stephan Moskovic sits down with M/M (Paris) founders Mathias Augustyniak & Michaël Amzalag. For more than three decades, the duo has shaped the visual language of contemporary culture through collaborations with Björk, Yohji Yamamoto, Nicolas Ghesquière, Jonathan Anderson, Madonna, and countless artists, photographers, designers, and publications, dissolving the boundaries between graphic design, fashion, art, music, and publishing to create one of the most influential creative studios of our time. Now, as the Creative Directors of Harper’s Bazaar Italia, they’re leading a new editorial chapter alongside Stefano Tonchi and Sissy Vian, redefining the magazine as “context, not content” across both print and digital.

When artificial intelligence can generate images in seconds, the founders remind us that the real value of creative direction has never been the execution of an image alone, but the human ingenuity behind it. Taste, cultural intuition, narrative, symbolism, typography, and the ability to synthesize ideas into something original remain distinctly human skills. In conversation with Models.com, they reflect on the craft and collaborations that continue to shape their work, and on the questions we’re all asking as fashion’s image-making industry enters an increasingly amorphous and ever-evolving era.
