The year started off with the typical whirlwind two-month tour. Paris was mostly dreary in January and most models stuck to dressing for the weather: peacoats, bomber jackets, leather jackets, and a bit of vintage/70’s influence as well. Couture picked up with models wearing more colors and aspects to shoot such as the always ethereal hair and makeup at Margiela by Pat McGrath and Eugene Souleiman.

New York Fashion Week Men’s was short but the street style was surprisingly good with models showing the variations of New York style. A highlight was the gender-bending Palomo show from Spain.

The Women’s Spring/Summer 2018 ready-to-wear shows in September went smoothly with pleasant weather making up for February. Traditional bloggers and street style stars toned down their looks and celebrity-models were swarmed by paparazzi and fans like usual so photographers were increasingly focusing on models. In addition, more up-and-coming models were wearing gifted or styled looks from various brands, not just shows they walked, increasing their platform and becoming influencers on their own.

Two models that stood out in 2017 were Adwoa Aboah and Teddy Quinlivan. Both models had great years in terms of their modeling careers but also set the path for model activism. Adwoa often wore designer brands like Miu Miu, Prada, and J.W. Anderson but always incorporated quirky details like her Chanel tooth jewel, a fruit-print outfit with a Gurls Talk tote, and fellow model Edie Campbell’s Itchy Scratchy Patchy boiler suit. Teddy understood the power of street style and always put on a fun street style show after the runway. I can tell Teddy loves fashion as she often wore Prada, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere. Her passion for fashion transcends through the photos.

A few models that I really enjoyed shooting and often flew under the ostentatious street style radar were Giedre Dukauskaite, Iana Godnia, and Lena Hardt. I photographed Giedre in brands like Prada and L’arte de l’Automobile.

and Lena epitomized the Celine woman often wearing pieces by the brand

Some newer models that left bold impressions include Ania Chiz, Mae Lapres, and Shujing Zhou. Ania never failed to impress, wearing pink, red, or space-style jumpsuits. I have photographed Mae for several seasons but she always manages to impress me and wears unique outfits every time. One of my favorite shots of her is with Jana Julius after Antonio Marras’ S/S 18 show in the full theatrical hair and makeup from the show.

Mae has one of the most amazing vintage collections I have ever seen and her cool blue hair doesn’t hurt either. Shujing also loves fashion and mixing designers like Margiela and Y/Project with Liu Chao and Soliloquy from China.

Sora Choi remained a street style favorite wearing versatile looks but always combining it with her gothic/punk/schoolgirl style.

Croptops also continued to be a model-off-duty staple whatever season it was. Models like Alanna Arrington, Aiden Curtiss, and Yasmin Wijnaldum often wore them; Yasmin though was definitely the croptop queen.

Comfort and practicality also took priority as streetwear permeated the models’ wardrobes replacing jackets with graphic hoodies and purses for fanny packs worn cross-body.

Newer models or models who had breakthrough seasons for 2017 include Charlee Fraser, Fernanda Oliveira, Gisele Fox, Ina Maribo Jensen, McKenna Hellam, and Theresa Hayes. Despite running from show to show during her record busy S/S 18 season, Charlee still managed to up her street style game. often wearing strong off-shoulder looks and the ever popular croptops.

Fernanda’s curly hair, statement sunglasses, and collection of jumpsuits was always exciting to shoot.

Gisele made a great street style debut after Victoria Beckham S/S 18 in a chic shirt and shorts ensemble.

Ina was a delight to photograph with an impressive array of colors, fabrics, and prints she incorporated into her looks.

Mckenna had a great year for work and has quite a sophisticated sense of style. One of my favorite outfits included a black cinched jumpsuit with a conductor hat.

Lastly, Theresa had an excellent S/S 18 season and showed her personality and style throughout the month.

Other great models from 2017 include: Carolina Thaler, Dilone, Duckie Thot, Hanne Gaby, Hayett McCarthy, Jess PW, Jing Wen, Marjan Jonkman, Mica Arganaraz, and Veronika Vilim.

Carolina always looked polished and chic.

Duckie continued to be a surreal beauty every appearance she made.

OG street style queen Hanne Gaby made fewer appearances but always lived up to the name attending the Proenza Schouler F/W 17 show.

Hayett rocked a personalized vintage-style outfit during NYFW in September.

Laidback Jess PW looked as cool as ever.

Jing Wen always looked lovely whether she was wearing all black, Celine trousers, or a summer dress.

Mica was, as usual, effortlessly cool.

Marjan was never afraid to take risks and try different styles.

Veronika wore a chic suit at Dior Couture S/S 17.

Victoria’s Secret models continued to walk the high fashion runways and often worked with stylists to take their looks to the next level. Supermodel Joan Smalls never disappointed and one of my favorite looks was after Lanvin F/W 17.

My favorite look of Romee Strijd was after the Missoni S/S 18 show where she wore an otherworldly red leather jumpsuit by Tamuna Ingorokva.

For Sara Sampaio, it was a chic cropped jacket after Alberta Ferretti F/W 17.

Bella Hadid wore of-the-moment skinny neon cat-eye glasses after Alberta Ferretti S/S 18.

As for the guys, Alton Mason was always a pleasure to photograph, whether he was posing or dancing in front of the lens in a Gucci-style look.

Jonas Glöer always looked on point in his laidback, relaxed style or with partner-in-crime, Kiki Willems.
