Champions of Earth

April 22nd, 2015 |Posted by steven.yatsko

In honor of Earth Day and the planet we inhabit, Models.com decided to reflect on a few of the industry’s most eco-friendly champions. These are the recognizable faces campaigning, not for customers, but for sustainability and environmental ethics, along with a simple compassion for Mother Nature. Forty-five years after the first Earth Day there is still much work to be done. Beneath the recent issues of social dissidence and global dilemmas, there is the simplest cause of them all–Earth! Here are few of fashion’s favorite sustainability advocates.

Gisele Bundchen, who recently retired from the runway, is an outspoken and longtime supporter of the environmental cause. She’s a UNEP ambassador amongst her many activism achievements and in 2014 the Rainforest Alliance added the Brazilan Super to its board of directors.

“Today is Earth Day! Let’s love, honor and take care of our beautiful Mother Earth. We are One. Our well being depends on how we take care of our planet. This is our home, the only one we have.”

Angela Lindvall is another model passionate about environmental awareness. In 2001, she created the Collage Foundation targeting the youth to enact change and create a “green” impact.

Former Victoria Secret Angel, Earth Hour global ambassador and creator of the earth-friendly organic skin care line Kora, Miranda Kerr proves she’s all about minding the environment while looking fresh.

Italian fashion designer Stefano Pilati of Ermenegildo Zegna donates five percent of net profits towards the Oasi Zegna initiative and has committed the luxury brand to going green and creating something more eco-conscious by using recycled yarns and natural materials. Fittingly, his AW 15 show took place in mock-forest equipped with lush greenery.

The actress and model icon Amber Valletta has been a long time activist, taking part in various earth-worthy causes and is a honorary board member to the Internation Fund for Animal Welfare.

“Happy Earth Day Everyday there is are a million reasons why we need to take care of our planet! Make Earth day everyday!”

Stella McCartney is a well-known proponent of sustainability in fashion, putting efforts to create practices that are responsible with transparent sourcing of materials. Her luxury brand carries a statement saying, “is our responsibility to do what we can to become a more sustainable company. We are responsible for the resources that we use and the impact that we have. We are always exploring new and innovative ways to become more sustainable.”

Chanel’s Belle

January 8th, 2015 |Posted by Janelle

To say Karl Lagerfeld is fond of Gisele Bundchen is something of an understatement. Over the past year the supermodel has become the face of everything Chanel from beauty products, to the classic No. 5. Given this mutual affection and Bundchen’s role in the brand’s now iconic “protest march” fashion show, it seems fitting to see Gisele as the face of the line’s spring campaign. Shot by Karl as always the ads depict a barefoot and beautiful Bundchen on freewheeling through the streets of Paris. Armed with a folded newspaper, crochet bindle and layers of Chanel (naturally) Gisele cuts a fine figure.

La Reina

June 27th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

With the triple campaign whammy of Balenciaga, Isabel Marant and Emilio Pucci Gisele Bundchen proves herself high fashion’s MVP. Given that she’s already the current face of H&M and has taken over Stuart Weitzman from none other than Kate Moss, it can feel as though we’re seeing Gisele everywhere and that’s a good thing. Bundchen has always been a compelling presence in front of the camera and her jam-packed campaign slate gives her ample opportunity to display her versatility. In Steven Klein‘s (Art Partner) punk ads for Balenciaga she’s a buzz-cut sporting rebel, while Mario Sorrenti‘s(Art Partner) sleek ads for Pucci give her a chance to amp up the sex appeal in Peter Dundas‘ elegantly embellished party pieces. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin offer yet another interpretation with Bundchen playing Marant’s well-dressed everywoman in Marant’s signature relaxed knits and layers.

A Grand Finale

December 19th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Marc Jacobs tenure at Louis Vuitton comes to a close with a stellar campaign shot by Steven Meisel and featuring a series of the designer’s muses. Film legend Catherine Deneuve, director Sofia Coppola and actress Fan Bing Bing share space alongside models Gisele Bundchen, Edie Campbell and Caroline de Maigret in Meisel’s elegant images. Sporting Mona Lisa smiles and pieces from Jacobs’ dramatic final collection Marc’s muses each represent a facet of the Vuitton ideal. Meisel’s portraits with their refined styling by Karl Templer, exquisite makeup courtesy of Pat McGrath and chic coifs by Guido Palau imbue his subjects a regal quality and capture the essence of each woman.

Face Off: Daft Darlings

November 6th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

French robo-duo Daft Punk have a way of showing up alongside gorgeous top models and while promoting their album, Random Access Memories they’ve made magazine appearances something of a habit. This month they share cover space with Gisele Bundchen on the frontpage of WSJ in a shot by Terry Richardson, but it wasn’t too long ago that they were in the pages of Vogue alongside Karlie Kloss. Add in a CR Fashion Book story back in August with Milla Jovovich, ads for Saint Laurent, Dazed covers, L’Uomo Vogue and well you get the picture.

But which model pulls off posing alongside the world’s most famous robots?

Who is taking it to that next level Gisele, Karlie or Milla?
