Pirelli unveils its Albert Watson photographed calendar

Since it’s practically time to bin those 2018 calendars, it can only mean one thing: Yes, Pirelli has released their iconic calendar. Published first back in 1964 the honor of photographing the storied thing has been reserved for the greats and its pages filled with even more legendary women. Owning one of these babies is a status-symbol considering only 20,000 copies are printed each year. Over the past years, it’s evolved from featuring stripped down pin-up to a visual affirmation of more woke times. For the 46th chapter in its history, Albert Watson was enlisted to immortalize Gigi Hadid, Julia Garner, Misty Copland, Calvin Royal III, Laetitia Casta and Sergei Polunin. Each role-play a character like “the painter” or “the wealthy socialite” in the narrative vignettes and Watson shot the pictures in a 16:9 format for a cinematic touch. “What I wanted to convey were the characters’ hopes and their way of thinking about the future, in a way that would bring with it the aspect of dreaming,” said Watson of the project. Over the course of his nearly five-decade-long career, the Scotland-born photographer has shot more than 100 covers of Vogues internationally.
