With a new switch to print format, Nataal Magazine embraces change. The London-based media company that aims to celebrate contemporary African fashion, visual creatives and the nuances of culture delivers this month two covers shot by photographer Julia Noni and Kristin-Lee Moolman. Inside the issue, you’ll find hair-raising beauty visuals from the hands of Cyndia Harvey and journey with model Mame Thiane Camara back to her native Dakar to see if her beach is better. Photographer Ronan Mckenzie captures the beauty of black hair while Rudi Geyser shows viewers a surreally displaced side of the Western Cape paired with South African designers.
The brainchild of actor and director Alassane Sy, creative director Sara Hemming and editorial director Helen Jennings, Nataal has been steadily building an avid following since its debut in 2015 and on the forefront of discovering new talent. In conjunction with Brooklyn creative space, Red Hook Labs, Nataal’s New African Photography exhibition entered its third year with much fanfare this past Friday. On view until Sunday, May 13th, this year’s show features an all-female line up of photography talent — Fatoumata Diabaté (Mali), Rahima Gambo (Nigeria), Keyezua (Angola), Alice Mann (South Africa), Ronan Mckenzie (UK) and Ruth Ossai (UK/Nigeria for a vivid exploration of representation, identity and the female form.
