Instant Classic

Paolo Roversi creates a vision of classic finery for Vogue China‘s September issue. There are no avant garde costumes or blurry photography tricks, but the story doesn’t lack for anything; Nicoletta Santoro‘s vintage inspired styling and Liu Wen‘s timeless beauty are more than enough and Roversi showcases both with his engaging portraits. There is something almost painterly about the look of this editorial and its nostalgic feel.

  1. Very pretty, liu wen is definitely having a moment, however this is not my favorite work of paolo’s.

  2. i like this story for many of the same reasons you cited janelle. i know for certain i would have loved it if it had been shot with polaroid the way he used to. it’s hard to view his digital work without comparing. i hope he eventually pushes the use of digital towards something different as opposed to just using it to imitate the look of his previous work. move forward.

  3. Omg! Liu, you’re killing it!

    Very beautiful.

Liu’s face completes the 4 representation of almost Perfect Beauty….

Natalia Vodianova, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington….. and Liu Wen

  4. She is a great model and she looks great in other editorials; but in this one she simply looks dead and ugly.

  5. Very new. The photographers and art directors are making a solemn effort to introduce new perspectives the images and it’s certainly working its magic on me.

This is beauty. Exactly the type of romance that ensues on a dewy midnight on Shoin grounds.

  6. hmm i really love liu, although i wish she showed more of a variety of expressions and posing in this ed

    but she is gorgsss nevertheless!

  7. i like her a lot. and Du Juan. i hope the Chinese mainstream society will eventurally accepts this type of chinese beauty (slanted single eyelid eyes). it’s sad they don’t appriciate it, they even say very rude things about these oriental eyed beauties, and they say westerners are stupid to consider these as ‘beautiful’. they all want to look like Caucasions, so sad, sigh….

  8. Sometimes she looks gorgeous, sometimes she doesn’t. I still wonder why she got a Estee Lauder contract.. I mean she is pretty, and looks incredibly gorgeous in some pictures, but Du Juan is a thousand times prettier. And Tao, and another one who was on the group cover of Vogue China.. all more beautiful than Liu.

  9. Gorgeous editorial. I love Liu, but I would have liked a little more variation in her facial expressions.
