The best in American sportswear is all about the mix between ease of wear and inspirational creativity. Think back at the greats of the genre – Halston, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs – designers varying style but united by an understanding of that balance. When it comes to rising stars with an innate appreciation of the sportswear ethos, the name Jonathan Simkhai should be at the top of the list. The CFDA Fashion incubator alum’s collections are a compelling melange of sporty, sexy, thoughtfully detailed pieces that just plain work. Simkhai’s spring look was influenced by the battle of Brighton Beach, and its mods vs. rockers subculture battle, but the real story was about an impressive mix of wardrobe essentials. Color-blocked dresses in navy, grey and white, leather bustier tops, a stunning white and grey dress with strategic cutouts – each piece better than the last and guaranteed to be worn frequently.
