John Varvatos spent many years in New York making a name for himself as the go-to guy for rock-star style, but his collections have taken on a new maturity and elegance since he decamped to Milan, perhaps inspired by Italy’s tailoring traditions. His Spring 2014 show still featured tousled, rumpled hair any indie frontman would be proud to call his own, but there was a clean, grown-up attitude to the three-piece suits and long overcoats. That’s not to say Varvatos has completely abandoned his showmanship, however. Many of his pieces had a bold sheen to them, perfect for grabbing attention either in or out of the spotlight. The palette was simple and concise, mostly black, white, and gray with a few spots of bright red, in keeping with Varvatos’ edgy aesthetic. The show closed with a series of band jackets, the embroidered closures picked out in subtle contrast, as Varvatos nodded back to his rock-and-roll roots.
