2012 Fashion Films of the Year

With each year that passes film becomes more and more of a force within fashion. This year hundreds of chic videos were released as either seasonal campaigns or standalone editorials, take a look at the creative clips that caught our eye in 2012.

A THERAPY
Roman Polanski – Director

With Roman Polanski directing, Sir Ben Kingsley and Helena Bonham Carter starring and a full-fledged premiere at Cannes, Prada’s mini film was the most star-powered of the bunch as well as one of the most entertaining. Most films created for fashion focus simply on visuals, so this clip with it’s cheeky plot was a welcome breath of fresh air.

KRAV MAGA SELF DEFENSE
Nick Knight – Director

Most fashion films offer a glossy break from reality, but Nick Knight’s self defense series for Showstudio gave practical advice in a glossy package. Sure, you probably won’t have to fend off attackers while wearing Givenchy, but a little Krav Maga knowledge is a good thing to have. Lara Stone’s ability to maintain her model poise, even while kicking some serious butt leaves us in awe.

NUMBER ONE
Klosslondon – Directors

Joan Smalls steps into the number one spot with grace and humor in this engaging clip from KlossLondon. Showcasing the superstar personality that has made so many people in and out of fashion fall for Joan, this film gave a glimpse at the woman behind the haute imagery.

FANCLUB
Ruth Hogben – Director

Ruth Hogben is known for her stark fashion films for the likes of Gareth Pugh, but that doesn’t mean that she can’t do soft and sweet. Her vintage cinema inspired clip for Louis Vuitton, is pure glamour straight out of the studio system days.

ISHIKO
Santiago & Mauricio Sierra (Cadence New York) – Directors

An ethereal trip into an manga-inspired fantasy land, Santiago and Mauricio created vivd world all their own and Ginta Lapina played muse in head to toe Azzedine Alaia. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if your favorite high drama anime came to life, take a look at this clip created just for MDC.

LOVE ME
Ruth Hogben – Director

A whole new side of Karlie was revealed in Hogben’s slick tale for Showstudio. The sexy clip capitalizes on Kloss’ chameleonic ability to transform herself and Hogben’s innate artisty behind the camera.

PRADA F/W 12 – CHESS
Steven Meisel – Director

Prada is the thinking woman’s fashion brand, so of course Miuccia would have her print clad beauties settling down for a nice game of chess. Meisel’s video version of the fall campaign played like the start to a particularly avant-garde art film with an exceptionally beautiful cast.

KENZO PRE-FALL
Quentin Jones (Cadence New York) – Director

Note to brands, this is how you show off a pre-fall collection and make it exciting! Quentin Jones uses collage and color to bring the Kenzo vision to life with flair.

DIOR SECRET GARDEN
Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin – Directors

Who else could take Versailles and transform it into a whirlwind fashion moment? Dior’s show stopper video was as much a tribute to the power of the iconic French brand, as it was a showcase for the clothes themselves.

IN THE DESERT SUN
Michael Pitt – Director

Hard-edged pieces from Ann Demeulemeester set against a beautiful desert backdrop and filmed in a way that is elegant and engaging.

T BY ALEXANDER WANG F/W 12
Daniel Jackson – Director

Alexander Wang is always on the pulse of what is happening right now, so of course he enlists musician of the moment Azealia Banks for the F/W film for his spinoff line T by Alexander Wang. The high energy clip captures the youthful, in your face and effortless cool of Wang’s clientele and Azealia’s charm.
