When Tim Hamilton launched his eponymous menswear line in 2006, he quickly caught the attention of the fickle fashion industry with his stripped-down, clean aesthetic. His clothes were instant classics, all-American items that became staples in many wardrobes—not surprising given his history working for Ralph Lauren.

Bergdorf Goodman was one of the label’s biggest supporters, devoting an entire room to Hamilton’s designs. His new collaboration this spring with the department store marks a homecoming of sorts, a merging of two brands with a shared interest in timeless style. Hamilton, who says that he was approached by Bergdorf’s and asked to create a capsule of fundamentals, says that the new items are old favorites—with a twist. “I really just revisited my first season and offered those pieces in new fabrications and detailing and fit,” he explains. The collection, all sharp blazers and perfectly cut shirts and trim trousers, is a turn away from the involved experiments with proportion and fabric he undertakes for his namesake line, but demonstrates the same eye for color and sense of unstudied repose. And, reflecting an understanding of the realities of the marketplace, Hamilton says that because the looks are mostly clean and clear-cut basics, he expects them to appeal to a wider range of customers: “It’s uptown meets downtown. I’m really just going after casual pieces that suit the well-dressed man.”
