Jason Wu’s thoughtful designs have always been at the borderline between old world charm and modernity. The elegance he brings to his gowns and cocktail dresses calls to mind the early work of Oscar De La Renta, or even Oleg Cassini, but though Wu looks to the past, there is always a touch of the future and never has this been so evident than in his latest collection. Drawing inspiration from Robert Polidori’s portraits of the renovations of Versailles, Wu created a look that is a study in contrasts. Cashmere cable knits, sequins, black chiffon and over fifteen different types of lace -materials that might seem at odds with each other, but together it works. Somewhere between casual and ornate, youthful and mature, lies the Wu woman. This mixture was accentuated perfectly by Diane Kendall”s bewitching makeup on the girls. Smoky eyes and bleached brows offset the Swarovski embellished blouses and added an unexpected edginess to the classic pieces.
